We dined at All Spice on a whim and were utterly blown away by the impeccable quality and inventiveness of the food. We've dined all over SF and had been missing the restaurant scene since relocating to San Mateo. All Spice is up there with the best of the best in terms of interesting and nuanced flavors, and perfectly fresh ingredients. Californian cuisine with creative integration of Eastern spicing. We loved everything from the amuse bouche--a sweet creamy shot of soup that I could have made a meal of--to the dessert--white chocolate mousse with peach compote and the most delicious brown butter crumbles I've ever had. We're so thrilled to have a restaurant of this caliber in our neighborhood. Absolutely exceptional food, a rare gem on the Peninsula.
The date was set: our 15th anniversary, last night. My wife, skeptical as ever of my attempts to try "audacious" cuisine, accepted my invitation to try AllSpice. This was my second visit and I was sure it would not disappoint. We approached the restaurant, hidden in an alcove off El Camino in San Mateo. No one knows that this place even exists, except for the few who care about this kind of thing and can afford it - it's not cheap. We found a parking spot and my wife was immediately captivated by this unassuming venue. A house! Off El Camino! Without much parking! Our hosts sat us and the menu, like my first time, was an amalgam of creative, aggressive, and exotic combinations of spices -- this place really lives up to its name -- with what I would mostly characterize as western-ish protein. It's not an Indian restaurant in any typical sense, though the chef was born there. It's sort of a California cuisine (maybe this is the wrong term but ... this is a yelp review so you get what you pay for) with a waterfall of again aggressive but ... superb application of spices, marinades, and sauces. My wife was at first sheepish about some of it, but we went ahead and ordered appetizers - Tandoori octopus, Amuse-bouche Cold Tomato gazpacho, Seared Scallops, Our entrees included: Lamb (aab-e-gosht), which is a kind of lamb stew served with a unique kind of nan that we both loved. Dessert was a chocolate terrarium paired with port. A fine finish.
Very creative dishes in a converted house.  Great vegetarian selection.  Prefix menu (and not cheap), but very good.  Also great presentation and service.
