Visited yesterday after a long hiatus. The restaurant has been recently remodeled, and there is a brand new sushi bar at the back. We ordered the Omakase menu, and put ourselves in the hands of their master sushi chef, Masaki, who curated an unforgettable meal for us. Beautifully presented, and as authentic as any meal we have had in Japan. Soup, cooked snapper, sashimi offerings, assorted sushi (much from Japan and all in season and fresh)- all prepared and served in front of us with explanations. Not inexpensive at $80 per person, but very competitive with other top sushi restaurants, and an excellent value for the high quality. I think we found our new go to sushi restaurant!
I was looking to try a new Japanese restaurant and I stumbled upon this place. The presentation of the restaurant definitely was pleasant to see upon walking in. The details of the restaurant definitely ensures that the place is managed well and kept in order. Although the place may seem exquisite, the food not so much. My girlfriend and I came for lunch to try their lunch set and we got the sumo set, makimono set, and the curry katsu. The food did not taste as well as what I wanted it to taste like. The sushi did not seem fresh at all and the curry katsu tasted mediocre.
One star is not to do with their food, it is perfectly fine. One star is because of their management (aka, really bad one). Four of us went out to spend good time with each other after a long time. And, we are having a good time, laughing, and it is easy to see that four girls are very happy spending time together. And, we were asked to be silent. Twice. By two different management people. We were asked to laugh less. Never heard of such thing before, they told us to laugh "a bit" less. Why? Because according to them, we were having too much fun and some customers would have felt discomfort. We are talking about a restaurant not library, or cemetery. And, 95% of the restaurant was empty. There was a table with three people, it was obvious they complained. It was clear that they were not having a good night. Management chose to silent the happy customers. They chose to make the happy customers less happy. I am iterating "happy", the type of people we need to see around more. Manager could not manage the situation well. She could not say to those people, "well, they seem to be happy. I can't do anything about it. They are having a good time, hope you did too." As a manager you have a choice, and last night they chose to upset the wrong group. I am a marketing professor. So, I am not writing this review because I am angry. I am writing it because they will read and understand the importance of good customer service, good management, and the consequences of a bad one. This restaurant managed it badly last night. In fact, they did not managed it at all. If you want to eat good sushi and you want to be alone, away from people (the cheerful ones), you want no music no chatter, just absolute silence, this place is right for you. I just know that it is not the right place for me nor for my friends.
