We were in the City on 5/15/16 with some out-of-town friends, and we wanted to bring them to one of our favorite places. We always stop at the Heartland Brewery and Chophouse whenever we visit NYC; however, this is the SECOND time we've encountered the surly hostess at this establishment, & we think that management had better let this woman go before they lose a lot of customers. We don't know her name, but she is a light-skinned black woman in her late twenties to early thirties. She never smiles, and she acts like it's a chore to seat us. And when we requested a table in the restaurant area near the window, her response was that we can't sit in the restaurant since we're not eating! How in HELL did she know that??? I respomded that we WERE eating, and she reluctantly set up our table for us...UN-believable! She never, EVER made us feel welcome or valued as customers, and the only reason that we didn't leave was due to the fact that we were all very hungry. Our server (Caroline C) wasn't that much of an improvement over our hostess, either. Although she seemed pleasant enough, she was NOT genuine in dealing with us, and acted like a robot in her interactions with us. Whenever she left our table, she returned to the hostess and they talked and laughed, every so often looking toward us. The ONLY genuinely friendly employee that we encountered was a female bartender, who really made us feel welcome when we arrived. In hind sight, we should've eaten at the bar, but, who knew? We've been going here for many years, and the staff has always been wonderful, as has the food. Employees like Walter Reyes, Juan Carlos, and so many others are gems that this place should never let go of! The hostess, who is the face of this restaurant, should be a welcoming, friendly person who is truly glad to see you, and happy that you've chosen to visit the Heartland when there are so many other choices in this huge city. We feel that a restaurant needs to have a warm, friendly person welcoming guests, and NOT a surly, un-friendly person who makes you feel like you're bothering her when you ask to be seated. I would welcome a response from Heartland's management as to our experience and concerns, prior to returning to this restaurant...
