Wow things here have changed.  I am throughly disappointed in our recent experience here.  While it is a nice place to chill and the food is good, this time in particular we had a room for a party and the service was horrible!!!! Can you believe we waited 3 HOURS for 1 order of fried rice, 2 HOURS for the other food; steak, mandoo, and poke!?  It wasn't even very busy in the common bar area.  It took maybe 1 HOUR for them to figure out how to work their own karaoke so we could use it.  We were barely checked on throughout the night and it was faster for us to go to the bar to order a drink rather than wait for a waitress to come take our orders.  The communication was poor and we kept hearing your food will almost be ready.  I had no idea what the deal was with the food, but  and the kicker was that all the food was full price after a 3 hour wait, no discount, no complimentary food or drinks, and no clear explanation as to what was up with the service and the long wait.  I know 3 hours seems like an exaggeration of the wait time, unfortunately it wasn't.  All in all we WON'T be back.
We usually follow Dave Toma and now his open mic event is here on Wed.   This is when a variety of musicians show up to play a couple of songs each. Really enjoyed the accordion polka songs, blues being played by an awesome lady bassist, the hippiesh couple playing their special version of songs and the variety of Hawaiian and wonderful songs dished out by the great musicians. Large booth seats, variety of puu puus (smells good when someone orders something), Tiare and bartender attentive, drinks strong & reasonable, street and private side parking lot (get free parking pass to put on dashboard) and the air conditioning works great now. There are also different events & musicians on rotating nights.
I'd give this place 100 stars if I could! I had the BEST time there on a Thursday night. I went with my bestie and we got drunk and full and sang our hearts out for what seemed like really great value. Service was the best! Ho'o made me feel like I was at my aunties house on moloka'i. What these fancy new hipster bars that keep popping up in Honolulu are lacking is found in Israel Kamakawiwo'ole sized quantities at Hibiscus Club. The Kaka'ako hipster places are so focused on how to charge $12 or more for a cocktail that's full of ice and an Instagram worthy looking slice of $10 avocado toast that they lack aloha and the soul that old timers bring to places like Hibiscus Club. Let me explain why I fell in love with this spot: - $5 li hing mui Sauza tequila shots (tequila is always the first step to a womans heart, right?) - $4 Lagunitas IPA - When I ordered my Corona, I was offered lime, didn't have to ask... cuz they know what's up! - karaoke booth with $1 songs. The songs pretty much stop after the year 2000, but that's the year the Music died anyway so get ready to belt out "hungry like the wolf". We did. No shame! - large selection of Hawaiian songs - clean bathroom! - weird tchockies and photos and random stuff stored all over. It's basically a 70's museum. - a pool table - live music, if you don't wanna karaoke. The karaoke booth is separate from the main room with live music so you're not trapped and stuck listening to me croon ;-) - service!! Ho'o was the best! She kept checking in on us and bringing us what we needed and helped explain the karaoke machine. She even sang us a song. - food was great. They serve escargot! And kalbi, poke, burgers. The menu is surprisingly extensive! The poke we got was fresh and expertly seasoned. The basket of fries was HUGE crinkle cut style. And piping hot, fresh out da fryer! Ho'o even confirmed that we were ok with that style of fries before she put the order in. That's pro service style! I can't wait to go back next time I'm in the area.
