Good food, good prices! We'll definitely return!
Tucked out of the way, this is a great restaurant. Very comfortable with plenty of seating. The servers are prompt and courteous. We found the food to be uniformly excellent with ample helpings. Best of all, the cost is very reasonable! Highly recommended.
It was a struggle to decide between two or three stars. I finally realized that I was only considering three stars because of how much I used to love this place and the great memories I had here long ago. Well, things have changed. There's a new sheriff in town, and that sheriff seems to struggle with cooking great Chinese food. I had an especially funny experience at House of Taipei about 15 years ago right after I turned 21. I was eating dinner with two buddies, and we were sitting across from a table of three, similarly aged girls that were cute. We naturally started flirting. The server came to take our drink orders and of course we were going to drink because we were 21, by god, and our reptile brains thought it would somehow impress the girls (yes, we were morons). The server informed us that they had mai tais on special, and we had no idea what mai tais were, so of course we said yes. Our drinks were special alright and arrived in big, fruity glasses with what looked like a fruit arrangement overflowing from the top. Grapes, pineapple, strawberries, everything. The three girls were literally hyperventilating from laughing so hard, and my friends and I all wanted to disappear under the table to die. That was a funny night that I still remember like it was yesterday. Tonight? Not so funny. Maybe I should have ordered a mai tai?! House of Taipei still looks the exact same inside 15 years later. No updates or remodeling, which I suppose is ok, but surprising considering its location in the Birkdale area. We ordered crab rangoon and wonton noodles to start. The noodles never arrived, and I wish the crab rangoon hadn't either. They were piping hot but chewy in the middle like they had been reheated. The cream cheese and crab filling was mushy, bland, and though I saw what resembled crab, I didn't taste anything that resembled crab. I ordered chicken in firecracker sauce and white rice. The chicken pieces were decent quality chunks of white meat, but were unfortunately lukewarm. The firecracker sauce, my old favorite, was delicious as I had remembered it to be. I really wish it had been hot. The white rice was good, which thank goodness. Unfortunately, I didn't make the 20 minute drive with high hopes of bangin' ass white rice. The server was nice and attentive, but the food overshadowed the entire experience. With mostly positive reviews on Yelp, I hope tonight was just an off night, but with so many great restaurant options in the area, I doubt I will be back anytime soon.
