Hunan Slurp is just one of the many somewhat overpriced, trendy Chinese spots to have popped up in the city (especially the East Village/St Marks area). Part of me thinks it's weird to be paying $20+ for the same dish I've had sitting on a stool in a hole-in-the-wall in actual Hunan province for $3, but the other part of me is happy that Chinese regional cuisines are finally breaking out of the stereotype of being a lesser Asian cuisine (i.e. how Chinese cuisine is "supposed" to be cheap to be authentic but the same isn't applied to Japanese, etc.) That being said, Hunan Slurp is a very cute place for a casual dinner between friends or for a chill date night. The dishes are a little on the pricier side and some dishes are more generously portioned than others. I was hoping to try the stir-fried frog legs, but they had run out that day (went around 7pm on a Saturday, had reservations). My fiancé and I shared the Hometown Lu Fen (one of their signature dishes), Hunan Charcuterie (beef shank, tripe, pig's ear, and pig's tongue), and Hunan Salad. The lu fen was pretty good, but nothing that special. I would definitely want to try one of the other entrees next time. The "charcuterie" was very tasty and perfectly málà, and the portion size was much larger than expected for an app. This can be easily shared between 4 people so we had plenty of leftovers. The surprising standout, however, was the Hunan Salad! It was much smaller than I imagined (just four small sections of eggplant stuffed with thousand year egg and other yummy mush) but the flavor was amazing! Given the price, I'm not sure how soon I will be back but I definitely recommend it if you're looking for tasty Chinese food in a very aesthetically pleasing setting.
The rice noodle is Ok. Vibe is pretty good. Price on the higher end
