Fantastic all around. It is worth the wait and more. The spicy hamachi appetizer is a must have. Even the California rolls are impeccable. It is not touristy and feels like the true intimate local spot it is. By far the best meal we've had over the week we've been here. Highly recommended!
Cyndy's Bottom Line:  Delicious high quality fresh fish and uni. *Small parking lot for (8) cars in the back.  Just don't miss the turn in which is a spilt second after you see the restaurant sign. *Recommend Uber *Reservations by phone required. *Good assortment of sashimi selections *Good selection of sake Stopped in for mainly toro and uni. This is what we ate/drank: *Chu toro sashimi - generous cuts of chu toro so scrumptious and decadent.  The presentation is beautiful in a blue glass. *Salmon belly sashimi - rich, delicious salmon belly. *Hokkaido uni - sweet, smooth texture and succulent. *California uni - earthy, robust creamy texture. *Kurobuta pork skewers - tasty tender pieces of perfectly grilled pork with succulent pieces of fat so yummy.  The squeeze of lemon and the wasabi enhances the flavor.  A must order one for each person. *Baby sardine chips - crisp and tasty, tiny sardines made into a chip. *Salmon avocado roll - delicious combination. *Shrimp and vegetable tempura - sweet shrimp in a light batter. *Yuzu sorbet - citrusy and so refreshing.
We decided to go for more traditional sushi tonight and chose Sushi Izakaya Gaku, on South Kings Street, Honolulu. The atmosphere was energetic and vibrant. Lots of families there and even though the chefs looked a bit scary they were enthusiastic on greeting clients. We chose their top Chef's Omakase and even though the presentation needs a bit more work, the sushi were nice. However, everything came all at once and that was disappointing.  Some of the fish were a bit warmer than I liked but the rice temperature was just right. We also ordered some à la carte and they were nice.  The fish miso soup was a great finish and satisfying. But I'm giving them only one star. Everything went well till we ordered the fatty tune (o-toro). We saw them serving to other guests and ordered two servings (4 pieces). However, as the photo showed, it was far from being fatty tuna. Right after they served us, they served others the real ones. Too bad I didn't have enough time to take photos of what they served others so I attach one from Google and out both side by side. I've lived in Japan since 1980 and I know what is a o-toro or not and certainly they charged us high prices for less expensive sushi.  That eliminates all trust being built and we of course will not go again. I believe one crucial thing for any establishment is never under-estimate your clients. That can be a mistake that may never recover.  This place did exactly that. One star.
