what can I say, sushi in Hawai'i, can't get better than that.

Went later in the night and still felt very welcomed. We had great service and the sushi came out quickly and tasted just as good as it looked. The whole underground food court is really neat to walk around and check out.

When we saw the menu and food display it really caught our eyes and we loved how the bowls looked full! When we finally had rsvp during lunch time, we ordered two bowls, the Uni, Toro and Ikura Bowl and the Salmon and Ikura bowl which comes with a side of hot Udon Noddle soup per bowl ordered. We also ordered a side Uni Sashimi plate that the waiter mentioned they only have it for their dinner menu, but they were willing to serve it to us. Our bowls came to the table along with the Uni Sashimi and the lady who served us said, "you need another bowl to share the Udon?" We said no. Then we came to realize our second Udon bowl was not coming out. We knew that the both of us should have each gotten an Udon soup. So we got the attention of the Manager who was walking around and asked him, the bowls come with Udon, he said "yes!". We said we only got one. He said "oh, okay I will be back". Our second Udon finally makes it to our table. The food and quality were great. The fish slices were pretty thick that it was enough to enjoy. We also asked for hot tea which we had to ask the waiter if the tea was complimentary because some places do charge for tea without telling the customer. But during our meal the staff was always filling our water and tea, which is a big plus. As we finished and cleaned out our bowls, we sat for awhile just resting and talking and tried to look for someone to get their attention for the bill/check. We decided to go up and pay because the waiter and manager were standing at the front register and figured it would quicker, then to keep waiting at our table. This younger looking asian male with glasses  turns and notice we were leaving and asks me "ready for the check?". I said yes. I also said and I have parking validation and he said "ok, I will need my manager's signature." I said ok. Which by the way, I knew this because this was our second time coming to Waikiki Yokocho and Izakaya Kai is the only place to go get your parking validated. As the male printed out the first check, it showed us what we ordered and to make sure everything was correct. So I handed my credit card. The male prints out a second check where I can now write down my tip, total and signature. I write in my tip amount and total up both and write down my final total. As I was about to sign my signature, the young looking asian male says to me "oh, was everything okay?" in a concern tone. I said yes. I then write in my signature. The male says again "oh was everything okay, because this is our minimum required tip that we ask for." While he is saying this he is also pointing at the check with the tip scale printed and I see that it starts at 18% and goes up 20%, 23%, etc. I got startled hearing this and made me feel like I was doing something wrong! And I didn't really pay attention to what he was saying and instead just looking at the tip scale. So I quickly said "oh, I didn't know that." And crossed off my original tip amount I had written down earlier and then wrote in the 18% tip amount. I was going in my pocket to write grab my calculator so I could add up my final total to write in, but the male says "oh, thats okay we can take care of it." So I took the pen back and said "can I just write down my total on my copy receipt." So I wrote down the amount of tip I would be charged on my copy receipt for my reference. And we left. As we are walking, I told my Wife what happen as she didn't know what we were saying. She then made us realize we just got hustled for tip! From all the Japanese restaurants we have ate, never had problems with tip. And only one restaurant we know of that already charges the service charges on the bill and clearly shows a blank line that shows Additional Tip as an option if customers what to include more. Izakaya Kai, did not include the service charge to our total, so therefore the tip option is decided by the customer. But this is really unprofessional and rude to then chase down the customer, expecting them to now pay you an additional minimum "required" 18% tip, as the male staff mentioned to me. So to now answer their question "was everything okay?" I wish I had said "No, you have now ruined my lunch and I will not advertise and show my videos and pictures to my family and friends on social media."
