The first thing I thought as I walked into Kobe restaurant to the receptionist's podium was "Where's that RED PLACARD????"  First impression was in the smell of dirty wet carpet was overwhelming.  There was a line, and the only thing I could think of looking at these people was "WHY?!?!"  A $50 gift card wasn't enough for my wife and I to stay there, as Waikiki literally has TONS of other restaurants (a Korean one a 5-minute walk down the street).  I worked at a Japanese restaurant in Waikiki in the 1990s and Kobe had a great reputation.  Owners need to shut down, renovate, invigorate, and reopen.  That Kobe name still has life.  Build on that.  (For Sale:  $50 Kobe gift card for $49!  :)
Mixed feelings about this place.. It is definitely dirty and stink. A tiny roach did crawl on our table but we still stayed and gave it a chance. Glad we stayed because the service and food was good. However, I won't be returning or recommending due to the fact that it is just completely disgusting in there. Hoping the health inspectors will go there soon.. it's to bad it's not maintained and managed properly.
I had dinner at Kobe Japanese Steak House with my boyfriend's family the other night because his mom wanted to go there. Parking is by valet only, but don't expect super energetic valets that are employed at hotels (or some other establishments). Usually valet guys will run up to meet your car and help you with your door. We had to pull all the way up before they noticed us. Upon walking in, I noticed the decor is a bit outdated. It's sad because the place must have looked pretty nice in its heyday but you can tell it's dated. We were a little early for our reservation, so we sat to wait for the rest of our party. In the waiting area, you can really smell the mustiness of the old furniture. Moving on to the food, price is as expected, with most dishes around $40-50. Not the cheapest, but it does come with miso soup and vegetables. Oh and some shrimp! My bf thought the shrimp tasted like frozen shrimp, and maybe it is but I enjoyed it LOL. Most of the shrimp I eat is probably frozen anyway. I got the filet mignon (8oz) and it was more than enough food for me. Oh btw for anyone wondering, the Kobe Emperor Steak is a 10oz cut of NY Steak. Now on to my steak... it was nice and tender as you would expect a good filet mignon. However, if was way over-seasoned. It was a bit salty for me.. My bf found the garlic fried rice a little salty as well.. that was ok to me (probably due to how salty my steak was) but the rice a bit mushier than I preferred. I'm not sure so I'm not judging one way or another, but is the chef supposed to just cook you your steak, or are they supposed to somewhat perform a show for you like they do at Tanaka's? Because our guy made the volcano but didn't make a big show out of it and everything was kinda downplayed. I personally don't care for a show but just wondering LOL... a good thing about our chef is he was nice about cutting some of the food in extra small pieces for my bf's baby nephew.   Overall decent place, but definitely room for improvement. Service was good, quality of food was good (at least filet mignon was lol), but consistency in the taste of food can be improved.
