The verdict as follows:
Tom Yam Chicken soup = 4⭐️
Red Lover Eggplant ???? w prawn = 3⭐️ a little too coconut-y for my taste. Prawns pretty fresh.
Pad see ewe = 5⭐️, not too dry and slurpy goodness.
Crispy pork belly with chilli, garlic and chilli jam sauce = 4⭐️ not sure how they got the skin to still crackle but ‘fuyoh’... pops in your mouth.

The plan is rather small so parties >5 may need prior reservations and arrangements!

This is one of the best places for fried rice. Their spicy fried rice is very spicy but really good. Their noodles and stir fry dishes are also quite good. Lunch are 3-4 bucks cheaper than the dinner. I have never been disappointed with the food here. Service is not very good but I have never mind that.

FOOD QUALITY
Three of us dined on a quiet Sun evening in Feb. We started with three entrees: the salt & pepper squid or calamari ($11) and our all-time favourites, curry puffs ($8 for six pieces) and mini spring rolls ($8 for six pieces). That was a perfect way to start the meal. The calamari was chewy and succulent with a nice crispy batter. The spring rolls and curry puffs had tasty veg fillings and crunchy coatings. For mains, we choose massaman beef curry ($20) and chicken pad thai with cashews ($15), with a large bowl of steamed rice ($7). Everything was fresh and tasty. Clearly, only the best quality ingredients are used and we all enjoyed our meals. The beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender, soaked in a rich, creamy curry sauce and served with potatoes and cashews. The fluffy white rice was the perfect complement. The pad thai was delicious with soft noodles, vegetables and finely sliced chicken pieces, with a spicy and fragrant aroma wafting off it. To wash it down a couple of coconut juices and a bottle of Singha Thai beer for me. We finished off with choc flavoured fried ice cream ($7), a little too sweet for my liking.

ATMOSPHERE
Korn is a small place with a thin and elongated layout with tiled floors and wooden furniture. There are interesting retro posters on the wall, some protected by wire mesh, which I found a bit odd. But it’s a cosy environment which we found pleasantly casual and relaxed on a summer’s eve. We booked in advance and for once, were rewarded with the best table, right by the window looking out over the busy Willoughby Rd streetscape. There was just a smattering of other diners, which suited us well as this could potentially be a noisy and slightly claustrophobic venue if it got full. But it was by no means empty, and the turnout seemed a lot better than some other venues along this strip. It was actually quite depressing to behold how this once bustling and busy dining strip, has fallen on hard times, with many restaurants closed down and boarded up, so having at least a half full restaurant isn’t a bad effort.

SERVICE
There were two young staffers on duty, both Thai, a male and female, casually attired and a little hesitant in English, but apart from that, they were friendly, polite and efficient. Orders were promptly taken and drinks, entrees, mains and dessert came out quickly and in the correct order. My only complaint was that they were a little lax in clearing away the dirty dishes from the table, once we’d finished.

COMFORT
We sat at table for four, and since there were only three of us, we were easily able to fit all dishes, plates and drinks on the table. The wooden chairs were firm and comfy. It was a hot and muggy eve, but with doors and windows wide open, and the large upright fan doing its work, the interior was cool, airy and comfortable. There are a couple of tables outside too, but we generally prefer to sit indoors.

TOILET
The less said about this the better. Suffice to say that its next to the kitchen at the back, and just in front of the garage. It’s a single uinisex affair; functional at least, with soap and hand towels. Watch the slippery floor.

COST
With our 25% Ent Book discount, (up to a max $25), we paid a modest $70 for three drinks, three starters, two mains, a large bowl of rice and a dessert. That’s excellent value for money.

BOOKING
Although it wasn’t very full, they still managed a respectable turnout, so I’m assuming that they have a loyal following amongst the locals, built up over the last few years at this location. This means that generally, booking ahead, at least for weekend dining, is the prudent thing to do if you want to be sure of securing a table.

PARKING
You can usually find a parking at the nearby Woolworths car park on Burlington Street, where the first two hours are free. If you need longer, and you don’t mind a short level walk of about 10-15 minutes, you can always find street parking in Ernest Street, not far from the corner of Alexander Street, where there are no weekend restrictions.

SUMMARY
We had a pleasant evening here and everything went smoothly. All my emails were promptly answered and we were given a nice table looking out onto Willoughby Rd. The food was fresh, tasty and flavoursome with fast and efficient service to match. Although it’s a bit small and cramped, the ambience, if it isn’t too full is laid back and relaxed. There are parking options at the nearby Woolworths car park or in Ernest Street, a bit further away. Prices are very reasonable, especially with a 25% discount with your Ent Book. It’s worth a return visit.
