When I went in I noticed they had rubbed out all the prices on the menu board in the shop. Fair enough. I know hot food outlets are dealing with soaring prices and I expected their prices to have increased recently. So I lifted one of their menu cards and placed my order. Their menu states for ALL meals: (until you get down to things like Chow Mein and Special Fried Rice etc dishes)
“Boiled Rice or Chips or Fried Rice 50p extra, Noodles £1 extra. 1/2 chips 1/2 fried rice £1 extra.”
I ordered my meal with chips which was priced £7.10 and I was charged £7.60. I didn’t notice the discrepancy until I had already placed my order and paid for it. When I queried why I had been charged 50p more when I asked for chips and not fried rice, I was told that ALL meals attract an additional 50p charge irrespective of which side you select!! I asked why, if this was the case, was the stated price not £7.60 and not £7.10. I was told that I could order the dish with NO side at all for £7.10!
Any Chinese takeaway I have ever used will charge a basic price for a meal which is accompanied by either boiled rice or chips - with fried rice and other sides like noodles and 1/2 and 1/2 attracting additional surcharges; others will place a surcharge for chips as well as fried rice. But I have never heard of any takeaway charging a surcharge regardless of what side is included!! I realise that many sit in Chinese restaurants will state clearly that a dish comes with no side and that this must be ordered separately. But this is not what was stated in their menu - if it was, 50p for a portion of chips, fried rice or boiled rice is a real bargain!!
Am I the only one that thinks this is very unusual pricing from a takeaway business? At best, it is poorly worded and at worst, it is a shameless money grab: a hidden surcharge that most customers will not notice, especially if placing multiple orders where the meals are with different sides.
I politely made my thoughts on this clear to the staff - and will not be ordering from them again. I am also going to raise this with Trading Standards. The issue is not the 50p charge, but the illogical and surreptitious way it is added. I want to advise anyone who uses this takeaway to be aware and check the cost of their order VERY CAREFULLY before paying.
PS Just to add insult to injury, the food itself was also of an extremely poor standard. There are much nicer takeaways in the area!
