One of the best BBQ places I have ever been to outside of Kansas City. All the meats are great; if you're a large enough group go for the Boss Hog - a full portion of all the meats. Top them off with the Angry Texan BBQ sauce. Large variety of sides are also very good. Nice bar with over 20 beers on tap and a huge selection of whiskeys! I think I may move in.
The Thanksgiving turkey was telling good. Very smokey. The dressing however was the best. Most amazing dressing ever.
I've been twice now, both during 100 mile bike rides. Usually, I could eat an old shoe and it would be delicious after burning that many calories but, unfortunately I can't quite say that about Monk's BBQ (and I'm partial to BBQ). The first time I went I had their burnt ends, dirty ride and Mac and cheese. The burnt ends were way too dry. It was close to chewing bark. I literally couldn't eat most of it. The dirty ride was also dry and for as much as went into it, surprisingly bland. The second time I went I had pulled chicken, Mac and cheese, and smashed potatoes. The sides were both great this time around. The chicken was fine, but the portion I got was pretty small given how much others got. The real disappointment was dessert. I ordered dirty pudding. The description of it sounded great (chocolate pudding with Oreo crumbles) but what I got was a very watery "pudding" that I literally couldn't eat. And for the price (about $6) it was pretty much half whip cream. I should've asked for my money back. The other issue I had with Monk's was the overall service. The staff was nice and tried but, while I can't put my finger on it, there was something about the overall process that just slowed everything down. Both times I've been the line was relatively small, yet it would take 20-30 mins to get an order placed. I didn't mind waiting for the food to be cooked afterwards, but the order time was a bit long. I really noticed this when I riders the dirt pudding. I ordered one thing there were 2 people in front of me yet it took close to 20 minutes to get a pre-made item. Anyway, Monk's isn't the worst BBQ I've had, but next time I'm in Purceleville, I'm looking for other dining options.
