I love eating at Michelin restaurants and the guide is my bible. Occasionally I disagree with the guide, but normally its spot on. Nathan Outlaws was without doubt a very good dining experience, and our host Josh and the entire team did an amazing job at making us feel welcome and relaxed. The food was very simple and extremely well balanced and seasoned. It was also highly original. Steamed haddock with swede, pickled onion and brown butter was a real winner and a very unusual combination. Its this type of cooking along with the atmosphere, wine list and service that put this restaurant a step above the rest. It also has a fantastic location and sea view (I am told), although at night time you will not be able to see this.So why the four star rating? It’s a matter of price and quantity;Out of the six dishes on our set menu for £140 per person, two of them were so small they were served together (like canapés) and were less than a few mouthfuls. Normally before a Michelin meal (particularly a tasting menu) I won’t eat during the day, as so many times I have been caught out by an excited chef sending out course after course of surprise and signiture dishes. Often I will find myself loosening my belt to accommodate all the wonderful food and getting anxious I may not be able to finish. In a recent Spanish 2 star Michelin restaurant they served us unlimited savoury courses until we told them we had had enough. We got to course sixteen before having four desserts and sat for nearly 5 hours! At Nathan Outlaws however we both left still hungry and the experience lasted just 2.5 hours. On returning to our hotel we both raided the mini bar of nuts and crisps and were surprised we were still so hungry. The menu was like six small appetizers, all absolutely delicious but tiny. The dessert was a single scoop of sorbet and a single profiterole and can only be described as more like a pre dessert. There is no doubting the quality or service here, just the quantity and value for money. For £140 per person I want and expect more. At the Ledbury and Sketch London, which were both 2 Michelin stars when I visited, we sampled many more dishes and had far more for a similar price, and even more so for michelin restaurants we have visitied in France, Spain & Italy.Adding a few more courses or increasing the overall quantity to the menu would completely transform the experience. Guests like me and other food lovers want to sample many different flavours and also leave full and satisfied. Unfortunately Nathans did not deliver on the full and satisfied. If you’re reading this review do not be put off. The food and service is top notch and I wouldn’t have purchased the cook book had I not loved it. Compared directly to other 2 star Michelin restaurants however, it falls slightly short…..
Amazing lunch today. I have been wanting to come here for some time, particularly after our experience at his protégée's The Cornerstone at Hackney. It truly was a lovely, memorable and delightful culinary experience and surprisingly chilled and informal for a 2 star restaurant. The service is perfect, not at all cloying or ingratiating or stuffy. It was so relaxing with amazing views to top it all off. And of course the food was exceptional (the Turbot was definitely the best I have ever been served) Throughout the meal was continuous fresh bread to mop up the amazing sauces. Needless to say our plates were absolutely wiped clean, I'm a Yorkshire lass and hate waste (-:
Absolutely incredible meal! Service was first class, and the food represented its outstanding 2 Michelin star level, and then some! Front of house were attentive, and were happy to go above and beyond for us. They even managed to get Nathan Outlaw to meet us, and sign our menu from the evening and book that was purchased at the end of our meal. Cannot recommend this wonderful restaurant enough, and will be returning without a doubt! Thank you team Restaurant Nathan Outlaw!
