I've got a question. What do you get when you combine a great location, commitment from a family who wants to prepare the best foods, and quality ingredients? You might have already guessed. You have South Alamode Panini & Gelato Company! My daughter and I went for a quick visit to the Blue Star Art Complex just to visit this establishment. We were lucky to find a parking spot in the art complex parking lot and pretty easily found the business located on the corner. There are two ways to get in and they are not fancy. But what they lead to is something you will not want to miss. Inside, there are a number of two and four person tables, as well as a couch for those who want something a little more comfortable. With lots of natural light from the windows on each wall, it is an upbeat interior with lots of colors on the walls, not to mention works of art. As we entered, we were greeted by who I took to be the daughter of the owners of South Alamode. She was very friendly and offered to give us tastes of any of the gelatos we wanted. After a brief taste of a few of the flavors, we decided we should probably concentrate on the paninis first. Then definitely to the "sweet side" after we were done with lunch. They don't have anything up on the wall as far as their panini menu goes, but they do have small panini menus printed out near the register with what is available. By the way, you did get a bag of chips with your sandwich. We chose the Mortacci Tua (Mortadella, Pistachio mayo, Provolone) and the Sottobosco (Prosciutto, Mozzarella, mushrooms, Truffle sauce, and Arugula). The Mortacci Tua was a less complex sandwich and was very good on a more basic level. There was plenty of meat and the Pistachio mayo was on the light side. You have to prepare something very well when you're preparing something simple. Two thumbs up for their work on this Panini. Now the Sottobosco was a more "bold" sandwich with stronger flavors. The abundance of Prosciutto and mushrooms made their presence known. As a lover of mushrooms, this was an awesome taste to find in a sandwich. Since this was my daughter's sandwich, that was the only bite I got, so I didn't get any of the arugula, even though there was plenty in the sandwich. I can tell you one thing . . . . my daughter definitely enjoyed it! She did eat only half of it, that way she had room for the gelato to follow. Gotta make a quick mention how great the bread is here they use for their sandwiches. Nice and crusty on the outside and not thick, but enough to make a delicious sandwich. The owner told me they get it from Central Market, and I can believe it. Awesome business providing a wonderful product to another awesome business. Keep the partnership going! I polished off my sandwich and chips, and was ready for a cold, tasty treat. There are two sizes of gelato to choose from . . , small ($6 and up to two flavors), large ($7 and up to three flavors). Originally we had planned to get a large, but decided a small was better after all we had enjoyed in the paninis. We decided to get the Mexican Vanilla and the Ricotta Blackberry, The texture of both was INCREDIBLE and flavors were just what you taste buds and brain want out of a gelato. Creamy, sweet (but not overly sweet) flavors to simply savor and enjoy. And they don't give you plastic spoons that you might expect. They give you more of a "tasting" stick that works even better, when you think about it. It gives you just the right amount of gelato to fully appreciate the flavors. You get the right amount in you mouth in order to savor. Wow! What an introduction to this wonder, family run business. It's one of those places that you would like to keep a secret, but you want others to know about it. If you're ever in Southtown/Blue Star area, drop in and give them a try. You'll be happy you did.
