With its convenience to Union and the fact that the choices around there are abysmal, I end up here a couple of times a month. I find the bowls to be a little too dry, but the picadillo and vegetable egg rolls are good with the hot sauce, and the baos are pretty safe orders. The menu is pretty big though, and most menu items are not self-explanatory, so I would suggest looking up their menu first because it can be a lot to take in at first glance. If you show up at lunch rush, the line is sometimes nearly out the door, which is no small amount of people. -They're pretty efficient at moving people through the line, but if you're crunched on time, you might rethink this place. In addition to the rush hour crowd, with a limited eating area to accommodate such a crowd, expect that you might have to grab and go. If the weather is tolerable, there's tons of landscaped areas with benches at the corner of Franklin and Jackson though. Service is exceptionally friendly. Added bonus that they have self-serve water, cups, and hand sanitizer.

Went here for lunch and didn't find anything special about the place. I should have known better. Too many items on the menu make no sense. The fusion of Asian food is never a good idea. It's like they dont know what they are good at and it shows. I ordered a banh mi with kim chi and pork. It will be my one and only visit. Food is overrated and way overpriced for a banh mi. The King Burito place a couple blocks away tasted much better than the kim chi banh mi. Two stars for quick service.

If you pass up this place for breakfast, then you are missing an opportunity to start your day off right. It's easy to see that this place is more set up for lunch - the menu itself shows that. But, if you need a delicious (and fast - it was up in just a few minutes) breakfast sandwich and coffee then stop by the Spotted Monkey. Honestly, you will not regret this. Upon the recommendation of Natalie, the gracious and kindhearted host behind the counter, I ordered Picadillo breakfast sandwich - an item I consumed much too quickly to consider taking a picture of - and a black coffee. Yes. Black coffee. Their usual serving is with sweet cream, as is traditional for Vietnamese cuisine, but Natalie was kind enough to support my caffeine habit. And, although strong, it is smooth. Not overburnt, like mermaid logo-ed coffee places on every street corner. Just good, kick in the rear, wake you up coffee. And then there's the sandwich. A combination of tender beef, egg, potato (although almost not noticeable), poblano peppers, golden raisins, and chipotle aoli in warm baguette. It is one of the most wonderful combinations of flavors I could have hoped for. Admittedly, I'm not a real big fan of a breakfast sandwich as a general concept, but this one might sway my opinion. It is melt in your mouth goodness. A little sweet. A little heat. A whole lot of delicious. Finally, because I don't get to try too many places in Chicago on a regular basis, I tried the duck baco. A small taco-like food with a fluffy rice boa as its shell. Every bite was amazing. The duck was perfectly cooked. The flavors were well balanced. If I could, I would sit here and eat them all day. Thank you, Spotted Monkey, for this start to my day. I look forward to coming back and trying out what your lunch menu has to offer! Oh - and a final shoutout to Shy - just as friendly and kindhearted as Natalie - who came in toward the end of my visit here with warm smile that made the day a bit less cold.
