After a day at Tulane, my husband and I wanted a late lunch/early dinner and both needed a pick-me-up and decided to hit up Superior Seafood & Oyster Bar. Our spirits were immediately lifted when we found parking on the Napoleon Street side of the building. We walked in and were greeted by two hostesses that were both amazingly cheerful for early afternoon, a time when most are sluggish. We were immediately seated at a table with an amazing view of St. Charles Street which was buzzing with the streetcars and people. Within minutes of being seated, a loaf of very warm and crusty French bread with a saucer of cold butter was placed on our table and we were faced with the challenge of restraining ourselves from gobbling up the entire thing since we planned on ordering both appetizers and entrees. The loaf was the perfect storm of crispy, soft, sweet, and savory and went so well with the chilled sweet cream butter. While enjoying the bread, our waiter that I'll call J came to the table with menus. He recommended the Pomegranate Mojito (which my husband ordered) while I opted for a Mich Ultra with lime. We decided on the crab cake and the Oysters Superioras our appetizers and decided that we would order our entrees at the same time. J advised us that although he would put everything in at the same time, he would make sure that our entrees would come out after we were through with our appetizers which we really appreciated. My beer was ICE cold and my husband claimed that the Pomegranate Mojito was the best he has ever had (and this guy has had many, many Mojitos in his days). Our appetizers arrived soon after that and were visibly hot and fresh. The oysters were literally bubbling and steam was coming from the crab cake. The crab cake was filled with lump crab and very little filler and went well with the Remoulade and while I would call the crab cake "good", I'll say that the Oysters Superior, which featured a variety of Superior's specialty oysters- Chargrilled, Bienville, and Rockefeller, were out of this damned world. Like really, really. My husband isn't really an oyster lover but the way they came to the table bubbling drew him in and he didn't stop until he had eaten THREE. I'd love to tell you which variety is better but I'd be lying because they all were phenomenal to the point where we actually considered canceling our entrees and ordering two more oyster appetizers. Yes, they were that good. J returned to our table to check on our drinks and clear the table for our entrees which he brought out right afterwards. My husband's entree was the Blackened Catfish Napoleon while my choice was the Pasta Vieux Carre'. The Blackened fish, which was smothered in thick bronze crawfish etoufee, was served with corn macque choux and whipped potatoes. Just as Blackened fish is supposed to be, it was crisp outside while soft and flaky outside and the seasoning was on point. My Pasta Vieux Carre' featured plump Shrimp, tender andouille, spinach, and THEE sweetest, plumpest roasted tomatoes over Al dente linguine. As a person who detests overcooked pasta, I was overjoyed that the pasta still had "bite" while being covered in sauce. Although the shrimp and Andouille were the main characters, the tomatoes really stole the show...they were everything! We were far too full for desert but will definitely indulge next time because there will definitely be a next time! Oysters Superior Pasta Vieux Carre
