I had an amazing few hours but felt that it wasn't long enough for the retail price of the ticket! I went to the free Friday session and it was a good time to go without too many people about.  The food was absolutely amazing! You get small entree sized dishes for the price. You do end up spending more but you can try a few things that would normally cost a lot more in the actual restaurant. I took some time tasting wines of the southern WA region which was very lovely. I didn't get time to attend a Master Class so really it was a whirlwind of a day and the event should be at least a couple of hours longer. I wouldn't pay to go to the event but was happy to get in for free.
First time going to Taste, thought the weather was going to be bad but lucky it stayed away so I could enjoy all the delicious food in the sunshine. It's so good not having to deal with money and getting a crown card as soon as you enter and putting the amount you want on it makes it easier when purchase your food. First dish I had to get was the beef tataki from Nobu - perfect as always. 2nd dish was the charcoal chicken from Manuka Woodfire which they had won the best dish the day before. Excellent flavours and loved the char on the chicken. 3rd dish was the pork belly from Shorehouse - was my least favourite dish of the day, it was ok but the texture of the pork was a bit weird. Then the final 2 dishes were dessert. The passionfruit brûlée from Bistro Guillaume was just to die for! Then we got the cinnamon spiced beignets with rum custard from Print Hall. They were so good love fresh hot donuts and with the custard they tasted even better. Can't wait to see what next year has to offer :)
Taste of Perth is an annual festival with market stalls for fancy restaurants and local 'artisan' food producers. You can save money by buying your entry ticket in advance. The discounted general admission this year was $15, otherwise it costs $30 at the door (but my tickets were free, woo!). My pro tip is to make the rounds and snack on free samples. I munched on sausages with Maille mustard, beef jerky, cider tastings, pickled onions, honeycake, relishes, whatever caught my eye! If you go on an empty stomach and don't eat any samples, you'll probably spend $40+ on food alone. My friends loved the sticky marinade, crunchy batter and juicy bursts of Silks' wok fried king prawns ($18). The prawns were huge, but you only got two for $18 - fine dining in 'market' style. I loved Silks' succulent jelly-like pork belly with golden fried mantou buns ($10). The official winning dish of Taste of Perth 2016 was Manuka Woodfire Kitchen's wood roasted chicken ($10). The chicken was smoky and juicy, which paired well with the salty miso sauce and tangy pickled red cabbage. I do love Asian fusion when it's done well. My other pro tip: book yourself into a cooking class! I locked in a couple of very limited spots for the Electrolux Chef's Secrets masterclass. Scott Bridger from Bib & Tucker taught us to prepare kingfish tataki and we cooked with kohlrabi (weird cabbage) and samphire (weird beach succulent). Fun, tasty and educational!
