The set up of the sushi bar itself is well appointed and the staff are all extremely nice. This lives up to the 2 star rating. The sushi itself, however, does not. The rice was decent but not special. I loved 2-3 dishes and the rest were extremely average at best (15+). It was highly disappointing in terms of creativity and just overall good taste. Satsuki is substantially ahead of this place and significantly cheaper. The cost relative to the food quality was appalling. I would not recommend going here.
Came here and got the Kaiseki sake pairing along with the omokase. They were doing a pairing that contrasted old and new styles of sake with each course. They used different glassware for each sake including some very interesting antique pieces. I actually found the host's description to be very interesting and educational and came away from the meal with a new appreciation for sake. The food, of course, was exquisite. I think this was perhaps the most perfect rice I have ever seen underneath my nigiri (picture attached). The only thing I would change would be the pacing although that's my complaint with most high-end places, particularly those taking place at counters. I think they should offer an intermission. It's a very long meal and sitting and paying attention the entire time can get a bit tiresome.
I was lucky enough to get a sneak peak of what I see as a labor of love. From what I can disclose, Bar Uchu will be the shining star of Eldridge Street. The pairings were on point. Chef Sam Clonts and the (amazing) bartender Frank Cisneros who presented our meals made for an unstoppable team. Aside from the breathtaking ambiance and extreme attention to detail, was the constant feeling that I was experiencing an adventure, and not just sitting for a meal and a drink. If you love all things Japan, and enjoy the finer things, call Uchu and make your reservation today!
