This place is beautiful, peaceful, and coffeeful
First there was a queue. This is a good sign
Unfortunately the organisation of that process needs work.
We sat at a table and was told it was reserved. Anyway found another one ourselves. No help.
Coffee was amazing and worth it just for that
The food was disappointing to be honest.
Eggs Benedict a bit bland and corn fritters a little dry.
Eggs were beautifully cooked though
Vudu Cafe & Larder is tucked into the cute little maze that makes up Queenstown's downtown strip. From the street it doesn't look like much, but it really is a great package of atmosphere, price, and quality. We actually went here twice on our trip because we knew we could get something fresh and tasty before sitting on a plane back to Auckland. For our first meal, I had the chicken burrito, while my friend got the salmon risotto muffin and a small side of red lentil salad. She was completely satisfied with her meal - fresh and delicious. My only qualms were that it just wasn't what I was expecting, but that's because I'm from Florida and was raised on authentic Mexican food. I need to just stop trying to make Mexican happen here (or, maybe NZ needs to just stop trying?). I'm not going to blame Vudu, because they did the best they could, and everything else was tasty. On our second go-round, we actually started at Vudu Cafe down the street but found the dining room packed, so we went back to the Cafe & Larder, and were glad we did. The Cafe & Larder has more fresh juices to choose from - I had a fresh beetroot & ginger, my friend got the green goodness, and I had order envy of her for sure - and more fresh salad options as well. They aren't all on display or listed on the chalkboard, which is a bit weird and part of the reason for the missing star, so be sure to ask what their salads of the day are. We both got the broccoli with green beans, almonds, and other delicious stuff. I don't even remember what was in it, but it was a nice big bowl of fresh greens, exactly what we needed after a weekend of Winnie's & Fergburger. The atmosphere was bright, light woods, and greenery - you just can't go wrong with that mix. The waitstaff was a fun mix of confused/friendly. Our food (and everyone else's, judging by the anticipation and "where's my food" head-turning) took a bit longer than expected for dishes that were just being warmed/scooped, but the waiters were really friendly throughout. One of the chefs even came out to clarify which salad my friend wanted, as he wasn't clear from the order. Make this a stop in Queenstown for brunch, coffee, fresh juice, or just a moment to people-watch at the waterfront.
