a great selection of beer! the peach sour is super.
amazing beer and food, go here if you're in Charlotte
Hung out at Wooden Robot Brewery on Sunday afternoon. We did not order any food, but we enjoyed two Flights of beer. Quality I knew I was going to be a fan of Wooden Robot Brewery from the minute I looked over the menu. They have placed a focus on IPAs and Sours, both beers that I have skewed towards recently. With thirteen beers on tap, we ended up trying ten total including Good Morning Vietnam, Overachiever, What He's Having, Generously Hopped V13, Farmhouse Lager, Botbier, Boca Fiesta, Pink Lemonade Blueberry, 124 Conch Street, and Positronic Mind. There was not a bad beer in the bunch. My favorite by far though was Boca Fiesta, a gose with serrano chile and lime. The sour flavor mixed so well with a kick, I could have easily sipped on that beer all day. I also loved What He's Having, a juicy west coast IPA, that managed to hit all the right spots. And I also want to highlight Good Morning Vietnam, a coffee vanilla blonde ale, that was like a delicious and lighter golden stout. My least favorite would probably be Farmhouse Lager, but it was mostly just because it was the safest option I tried. This is not the place to be timid, if you see a fun selection know it will be solid. Quantity Flights here come with five 5oz pours, but it felt like even more. I found myself filling up much faster than usual here. Value They charge individually for each beer in the Flight, which ranges from $2 to $3. It is a fair price especially considering the slightly larger pours. Ambiance Wooden Robot Brewery is found in the South End area of Charlotte. It is a large brick building that can easily be identified with its two outdoor patios. There is a large open patio in front of the building, then a smaller more intimate deck on the side. It seemed like the smaller deck was originally meant to be a smoking area, but I didn't notice any smokers when I walked by. Inside they have two main rooms attached by a small hallway. Each room has its own bar. The first room has a more lounge feel, with couches and a bar mostly to grab and go. The back room seems more like a dining area. It is where the kitchen is located, but also has lots of high tops as well as stools around the bar. The back area has more windows flooding the place with light even on a gloomy day. There are a few televisions throughout the space, but it is not really somewhere I would go to watch a game. The music was 90s and early 2000s hip-hop, which seemed to please the crowd. Crowd The brewery was a hot spot on Sunday afternoon. Both rooms inside as well as both outdoor patios were packed with people. And while it was probably extra full because of the holiday weekend, I suspect it always has a good crowd. It was definitely a crowd that skewed younger and was a popular spot for groups of friends. However, there were more than a few families as well. They also permit dogs on the outside patio. Service The space is shared by the brewery and a restaurant. If you want food you order from the waiters making the rounds, if you want beer you go up to one of the bars. We had just come from lunch, so we primarily interacted with the bartender. He was extremely friendly and constantly joking around with the other guests. It was a nice laid back atmosphere and you felt no pressure to order food, which was my initial fear. And most folks seemed to be doing the same as us. Parking The brewery is not far from the city, so it made for a pleasant walk. The nearby area had some limited street parking and then several lots, but it appeared they all charged a fee. Extra The beer alone at Wooden Robot Brewery makes it worth a visit. The fact that they also have an awesome space and great food options available are just extras. Definitely one of the best places I visited in Charlotte and among the best breweries I have been to.
