Malaya is in my top 3 Malaysian restaurants in Melbourne, and my top 3 of all the restaurants on Victoria Street. The food is great value, seemingly from the same kitchen as the seafood-focused Pacific House Richmond next door. They do Malaysian classics like nasi lemak and laksa really well, and I'd never go to Malaya without having the iced teh tarik. Heads up on the fish head soup though - it's very bony and potentially hard work if you don't know what you're doing. If you're ordering the curry version, the seafood laksa is similar but without the 'fish head' experience. The service can range in warmth but is usually great and very friendly. It can get busy on weeknights but is generally more chilled and quieter than the restaurants towards the Hoddle St end of Victoria Street. I've never failed to get a table. Kid-friendliness: There's nothing special for kids but they're warmly welcomed. Service: Dine in Meal type: Lunch Price per person: A$20–40 Food: 5 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4
