There's no other place to get the most authentic and traditional Oaxacan food than at Mezcal Restaurant. I'm proud to call the owner my friend, and one of the most passionate and caring people I know in this industry, serving his family recipes, generations old, namely in the moles (Estofado, Coloradito and Mole Negro). Mole Negro's my favorite! If you love Mezcal, you probably know it comes from Oaxaca, where the piñas (hearts of the agave) are cooked in pits underground, giving it its signature smokey, earthy taste. Personally, I had the opportunity to go to Oaxaca (pre-CoVID), through winning a Bartending competition with Mezcal and I could barely contain my excitement talking to Adolfo, while he shared his personal Mezcals and stories of home and of course, eating Mole Negro with homemade tortillas. That trip will happen some day!! I can't wait to be there and eat the food, but until then, we have the most amazing and authentic Oaxacan food right here in San Jose! This time, we got: -Tamal de Mole: Chicken Tamal w/Mole Negro, wrapped in a banana leaf (my favorite! So much texture and flavor! -Puerto Prawns: Shrimp marinated with garlic, olive oil, Oaxacan herbs, sweet potato puree, homemade cilantro vinaigrette. Perfectly cooked and balanced! -Tricolor Salad: Romaine, radish, jicama, avocado, cheese, cilantro dressing. I always need something to cleanse my palate between bites, so this simple salad is a must. -Pulpo al Grill: Octopus, mango slaw, salsa verde, chorizo, cucumber, radish, and greens. My foodie friends' favorite! -La Torta: Telera bread, mayo, refried black beens, sliced turkey, lettuce, quesillo, avocado, pickled red onions (choice of chicken or chorizo). Foodie friends' other favorite! (Personally, I'm not a huge fan of chorizo, only because it's too salty for my taste, but I hate admitting that because everyone else in the world who's normal loves it.) -Flautas: Chicken or Potato (we got potato), corn tortillas, broccoli mango slaw, rice, guacamole, and roasted poblano cream. Loved the bite and crunch! We were laughing about this, because it's such a simple thing, but we were going to town on the rice and beans. So good! -Guacamole: made fresh to order, level: Spicy!! This was actually the reason I came here for the first time, many years ago. I saw a video of the server making guacamole on a cart right in front of you, and you could ask for more jalapeño, or more cilantro, or more lime, and I thought: I need to have this experience!! Memelitas: Handmade corn tortillas, brushed with pork crackling spread, black bean puree, and quest fresco. I took a chance with this one, because I couldn't visualize it by reading the menu description. Simply delicious! -El Viejito Cocktail, and the Perfect Margarita. I always maintain, be as adventurous with your drinks as you are with your food! Personally, I just ask for whatever Mezcal they feel like pouring me, and it's always devious, and paired with their homemade sangrita and an orange slice.
