The Stables is like many restaurants we have found in the Queenstown/Arrowtown area: Good interior decor, decent food with a relatively straightforward menu and mediocre service. There are reasons for all of this. The decor is understandable - when you are in a touristy town, people choose a place on how good it looks. This is a smart investment for a restaurant in this area. The menus are pretty reliable, but not particularly innovative or adventuresome. Tasty enough but don't expect any culinary miracles. The serving staff are almost always foreigners in NZ (or Australia for that matter) who are in the country on tourist work visas. They are happy to get any kind of job so they can travel around the country. Their lack of knowledge and professionalism is evident everywhere. The Stables fits this bill to a T. Saying that, the fish of the day dish was pretty good. My wife's venison osso bucco was really good. The wine list was not extensive but it was adequate. A safe bet.
