My best friend organised my 69th Birthday Party at Sails Restaurant. My wife and I walked from home, but others came by train and ferry. Sails is located on the headland between Harry Seidler's Blues Point Tower and Lavender Bay, at the opposite side of the water from Luna Park. Great harbour views from every table. On arrival we were offered water and that came quickly. Drinks menus also quick. Food menus soon after and then there was a huge wait. Our drinks arrived, and we pondered the menu for about 20 minutes, but we knew what we wanted in less than 5. I ordered a bottle of French Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley ($89) and 2 glasses. We saw the wine poured once and then it disappeared, seems like we had 4 glasses each though, but it was stored away from the table and the pouring was seamless. When we did get the waitress, she seemed appalled that none of us wanted an entrée and we felt that her interest was lost, when 3 decided on the same main and I had a different one. The reason for not wanting to be filled to the gills with an entrée, is more about age and our interest in not being overfull from the meal. We felt they had an expectation unfulfilled. Sourdough bread with truffle butter and cultured butter was added to the table. Really liked the truffle butter. I ordered the AQUNA MURRAY COD ($52), with celeriac, finger fennel and diamond clam velouté, and it was very good, loved it. The others ordered the KING GEORGE WHITING ($53), with kadaifi, scallop prawn mousseline, finger lime and beurre blanc. All loved it, too. We had 3 sides including BABY COS, radicchio, radish ($13); SPRING CUCUMBER SALAD, fennel, fetta, mint ($14) and FRIES onion salt, chive mayonnaise ($12). All had good flavour. I ordered dessert, I chose the DARK CHOCOLATE, hazelnut ice cream, coffee crumble ($21) and I really enjoyed it. The others enjoyed coffee and petit fours ($8). We were all full and happy with our meals. The wine waiter and the Maitre d' lived up to our high expectations. A meal here for the taste of the exquisite food and wine, is highly recommended.
