Once upon a Sunday we found ourselves at 705 Coffee in Vienna, hoping to secure a table. And as luck would have it, the brunch gods were on our side. We got a table. Which, considering how popular this place seems to be for weekend brunches, felt like a small victory in itself and keep in mind, you cannot reserve! Inside, 705 Coffee has that modern, trendy and cozy atmosphere. The cutlery is lovely, the accessories are fun, and there are plenty of little details to catch your eye. Our little brunch feast consisted of a Club Sandwich, Brioche Royale, Caffè Latte with salted caramel, warm rose matcha with lactose-free milk, a mimosa, and an iced strawberry matcha. FOOD: Portions are quite generous. The Club Sandwich arrived looking confident, and I barely managed to defeat it. It was very tasty and satisfying, although there was one tiny battle between me and the sandwich: it had a tendency to fall apart while being eaten with the hands (if that’s your preference too). Perhaps the sandwich simply wanted to be free. Either way, a little structural engineering would not hurt. The Brioche Royale was another winner. The poached eggs were cooked nicely, and the whole thing made for a very enjoyable brunch dish. DRINKS: I was particularly excited by the matcha selection, because there are several interesting variations, and naturally I had to try a few. The rose matcha and the iced strawberry matcha were both beautiful and enjoyable, but for my taste, they were very sweet. Like very. I actually asked for the strawberry matcha to be made less sweet after trying the first drink. Even then, it was still sweeter than I personally prefer. This is, of course, a matter of taste, and if you have a serious sweet tooth, you may find yourself living happily ever after. But if you prefer your matcha a little more delicate and earthy, it is worth mentioning when ordering. The salted caramel latte was also tasty, but, as expected, it was on the sweeter side. Now, slightly awkward chapter. For me, that was the view towards the kitchen area. I personally found it a little disturbing to watch food rests being disposed of into the trash bin right in front of the guests (you can see it in the last picture). It is certainly not the end of the world, but I think a light curtain or some kind of subtle separator between the kitchen area and the guest seating could make the experience feel more polished and comfortable. Also the menu is not comfortable to look through and to hold, and the double sided format is rather confusing. On the other hand, I noticed that delivery and takeaway are also available, which is a nice option. And then there are the signature canned drinks. They make these drinks fresh and pack them into cans, which looks genuinely cool. As for the service, I would describe it as okay. Nothing bad happened, but nothing particularly memorable happened either. It is very clear that there is a lot of demand and that the team has quite a lot of energy to spend on serving everyone. Still, I believe that sometimes a simple smile can change the atmosphere of an entire visit. When a place is already popular and the food is good, the experience becomes the little extra that can turn a good brunch into a great one. Did 705 Coffee win my heart completely? Not quite. Would I come again? Possibly. For now, I shall continue my quest. This particular story ends here, but my brunch adventures certainly do not.
