In the culinary landscape of Coastal Virginia, "authentic" is a word often tossed around with reckless abandon. Yet, at Agave Azul, authenticity isn't a marketing slogan—it is the very foundation of The litmus test for any serious Mexican establishment is the tortilla, and here, they are nothing short of a revelation. Hand-pressed and homemade, these corn vessels are the perfect, chewy stage for their carne asada. The carne asada was perfectly seasoned and tender. The guacamole was fresh, refreshing and well seasoned. The red onions, cilantro and tomatoes were a balanced mixed and not too overpowering. I ordered the cheese pupusa, made to order and with fresh masa. I can’t say anything other than it was perfection. Think grilled cheese but elevated, and infinitely better. Even comparing it to grilled cheese feels like an insult. I really love that they provide a good selection of salsas. I tried each of them with the chips and they are delicious. The rice is the best rice i’ve ever had in any Mexican restaurant probably ever. The excellence of the food is matched only by the warmth of the service. The staff are warm, welcoming and attentive. We love this place and will be back as often as we can.
