Ok - so I had cycled from Rimini to Riccione in the early afternoon hoping to experience the cuisine of a different location. Unfortunately, Riccione was shut, apart from one restaurant on the port, that seemed to be accessible only by submarine. So I returned to Rimini, and likewise revisited Ristorante Amerigo. The first time I stumbled upon this place by accident, and was pleasantly surprised. Second time, blown away. I'd gone out to buy tobacco again, as in England it's cheaper to smoke saffron. Typically two of the 24hr tabaccherias were closed, presumably in sympathy with Riccione, so ended up earlier than expected at Amerigo. You can choose to sit in the patio area, next to the road. Who would do that, you ask? Most customers apparently. I chose inside away from the traffic. Importantly, don't be put off by the name. This place is not an American themed fast-food fat farm. It's named after Amerigo Vespucci, the explorer upon whose via the restaurant resides. More importantly, the quality of the cuisine is exceptional, and not 'just for the price'. It is fantastic. However, considering 'the price', I'd like to point out, having eaten in many of Rimini's 'top-tier' fish restaurants, this place is equal, or not, better! To my mind, if an oyster is served chilled on ice, in its shell, and tastes like an oyster, you can't justify charging double the price just because you've installed fancy lighting and artful ceiling tiles, as some of Amerigo's nearby competitors do. Moreover, you get a bucket of mussels for just over a tenner (English Money). Do it. I opted for rice main courses both times. Again, in comparison to some restaurants that have disappeared up their own reputation, these were sublime. Particularly, the black rice and veg, with prawns in a creamy sauce with a curryesque leaning. Subtle, perfectly cooked, and filling. Beyond this, the staff are friendly, attentive, professional and were willing not to laugh at my terrible attempts to speak Italian. They also know their wine pairings! It's a bit 'no frills' and plays the same kind of seaside disco piped pap that everywhere on the Mediterranean does, but this place, front of house and kitchen, have heart and soul, and wear them both proudly. You'd be a fool to sit by the road, but more of a fool to miss Ristorante Amerigo. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 4 Price per person: €30–40 Wheelchair accessibility: Looks accessible
