Ordered my friends a round of drinks and paid cash. Later ordered again, and then a sign at the till was displayed ‘no cash, sorry for the inconvenience’. I wanted to pay this also in cash, but as requested I swiped my card for a $5.00 purchase as displayed on the machine, only to find $5.08 deducted from my account that I never authorised! Such intransparent business conduct with increasing the price after swiping the card needs to be called out and publicly shamed. I am simply not responsible for your business’s ‘convenience’ in the sense as willing for myself to be out of pocket for it! 5 star experience easily ruined with a swipe of a card. Edit 8 August: $5.00 to pay, $5.00 displayed on the machine, only to see $5.08 charged to my expenses. So YES a charge intransparently added after quoting, which is dishonest and nasty and only ‘common’ (as you mentioned) if the business is acting dishonestly (note that there are indeed fine businesses that do NOT engage in this practice and simply charge as quoted - or allow me to use a payment method with no charges). The onus is on you to display the charge, and offer an alternative that charges the price (in this case $5.00) as quoted (cash or electronic is up to you). If you don’t believe me then do some reading on the rules as outlined on the ACCC website.

Hi Christian, thanks for your feedback. We’re sorry you were disappointed by your experience. The additional $0.08 was the card payment surcharge charged by our payment provider. This isn’t a fee added after the transaction or an unauthorised charge, and it’s a very common practice at hospitality venues across Australia. We understand it can be frustrating if you weren’t expecting it, and we appreciate your feedback about the signage. We’ll certainly review how we communicate this to customers to make it clearer.
