The Early Bird Gets the Bombolone… Unfortunately, I Was Not That Bird I came to Pasticceria Barberini with a mission: Bomboloni. That was the plan. That was the objective. I had visions of beautiful, freshly made Italian doughnuts dancing in my head. Alas... I was too late. Apparently, the early bird doesn't just get the worm in Rome. The early bird gets the Bombolone. Barberini makes its pastries fresh for the day, and once the popular items are gone, they're gone. So let my disappointment serve as your public service announcement: if you're coming specifically for the Bomboloni or Maritozzi, GET THERE EARLY! But all was not lost. No Bomboloni? No problem. Cannoli to the rescue! Thankfully, my pastry pilgrimage was far from a lost cause. I ended up leaving with the Cannoli, Sacher, Wonka, and Bignè. And let me tell you: those Cannoli were DEFINITELY worth the trip. Crisp shells, creamy filling, and that perfect contrast of crunch against softness. I may have arrived looking for Bomboloni, but the Cannoli stepped forward and said, "Don't worry. We got this." And they did. The Bignè were another treat. They actually reminded me of mini Maritozzi. They're obviously different pastries, but those adorable little cream-filled puffs gave me the same wonderfully indulgent pastry-and-cream satisfaction. Basically, if the Maritozzo had a tiny cousin, my brain has decided it's the Bignè. Then we had the Sacher and Wonka, because apparently after missing the Bomboloni, I decided the appropriate response was to conduct extensive research into Barberini's chocolate department. For science, obviously. A very special shout-out goes to Monica, the wonderful pasticcera who helped us. Monica was an absolute delight—warm, kind, incredibly patient, and very helpful while we made our selections. My mom and I are American tourists and don't speak Italian, so we especially appreciated her patience while we navigated the language barrier. She never made us feel uncomfortable or rushed while we figured out what we wanted. That kind of hospitality sticks with you. And Monica's work wasn't finished when she handed over the pastries. Oh no. These pastries had travel plans. I told her that I needed to take everything with me from Rome to Milan, and she carefully wrapped and packaged my selections for the journey. So before anyone judges the slightly battle-weary appearance of the pastries in my photos: pardon their looks. They've been through some things. They were beautifully packaged when they left Barberini. Then they traveled from Rome all the way to Milan with me, got unpacked, went into my hotel refrigerator, and were enjoyed over the next few days. And they traveled remarkably well! Monica wrapped them like she knew they had a train to catch. Grazie mille, Monica! Thank you for your patience, kindness, hospitality, and for taking such good care of two American tourists fumbling their way through Italian. The pastries were wonderful, but you made our visit to Barberini even sweeter. Getting there: I came via Piramide Metro station, and from there it was about a 10–15 minute walk to Barberini. And yes, I walked 10–15 minutes specifically in pursuit of pastries. I regret nothing. Well... I regret one thing. I should've gotten there earlier for the Bomboloni. So learn from me: if Bomboloni or Maritozzi are your main objective, make Barberini a morning mission. The popular pastries aren't going to sit around waiting for sleepy tourists to eventually wander in. But if you do arrive too late, don't turn around. Look at the pastry case. There is a Plan B. There is a Plan C. There is a Plan D. And, apparently in my case... Plan Bignè. I came for the Bomboloni. I left with Cannoli, Sacher, Wonka, and Bignè. Then I transported the evidence across Italy. I'd say the mission was still a success. And if there's one thing I learned: the early bird gets the Bombolone. But if you're not that bird? Cannoli to the rescue.
