Service is friendly enough, nothing exceptional, but not rude in any way. They say hello, take your order, and routinely check up on you. In that sense, they do better than some places, but to me, that should be a given. Though, they can't seem to fill the bar. You may see it bustling on a Friday or Saturday, but on a weekday there will be a couple regulars at the bar, and then a table or two, usually when there's a hockey game. So on that note, it can be a good place to catch the game if other bars are crowded.
I can't comment on the food– the kitchen seems to close as early as 9:30 on a Friday, and I've never seen anyone eating there. Some menu items look nice enough, but I have yet to try. The decor is alright. Fairly nondescript, but not ugly like some older places on Bloor.
Overall, if you ignore the mouldy-tasting beer on tap, there isn't anything overly bad about this place, but I can see why the business seems to go to other places nearby. If I want cheap beer, Kilgour's, Lab, and Green Room can all deliver a cheap pitcher that doesn't taste like old cheese, with much better ambience. For good Ontario beer, there seem to be new craft bars on Bloor every week– Insomnia and Crafty Coyote are good choices. And if I want a fancy European beer, any of those Belgian places a little further downtown like Prenup or Town Crier can give me the same beers, with better service, better food, much better atmosphere, and surprisingly similar prices.
Go to Beer Station if you want a couple shots and a couple moderately priced beers, and maybe to catch the game, but don't bring anyone you want to impress.
Another patron who was playing pool had wanted a glass of water, which the owner refused him. There were no bottles of water for sale and I have no idea why you wouldnt offer a paying customer, a glass of water. These are just some of the examples of this extablishment I do not understand. One would think you would want to do more for your customers! Shocked this place has stayed in business as long as it has.
