On Saturday evening 16th November 2024 myself and my best friend went to the Mount Nelson Hotel to play pool in the Lord Nelson Room. This particular night we asked the waiter for two single shots of there cheapest Jameson on the rocks. When we asked for the bill we were shocked at the price - R150 a shot. I told the waiter that we orders the cheapest Jameson, the waiter immediately said he will call the manager(it was as if he already anticipated that we would query the cost - later on in this story you will find out why), anyhow the night manger Brian came and asked us what the issue was and I explained that the cost of the Jameson was not what we usually get charged and he abruptly told us that is the cost as we are the Mount Nelson, the top hotel in Cape Town and it’s tourist season so they push up their prices. After some time I asked for the menu so I could check if indeed we were being charged for the cheapest Jameson they had on the menu to which I found out that we were not. There was another Jameson on the menu that cost R100 per shot and that is the one we ordered. Then all of a sudden after I pointed this out to the night manger Brian, he tells me that the waiter says that we swore at him some time during the evening- which is so far from the truth. I told Brian we absolutely did not swear or treat any waiter otherwise. I then put two and two together that the overcharging of the Jameson was linked to this waiter having some unknown grievance against us. I brought this up with Brian and then he was al of a sudden defensive to the situation. I asked Brian why he did not take us aside during the evening to approach us on what this waiter said so that we could be aware of it and deal with it. He could not answer me on that. I then asked that he bring the waiter that accused us to speak directly with us face to face and Brian did not want to do that, he said to me which waiter severs you, I said there were more than one waiters that attended us obviously due to shift changes. I thought it was strange that Brian ask me this as he told us that the waiter that accused us came to him so Brian would have know which waiter - clearly Brian trying to protect/cover for the waiter instead of being truthful and dealing with the situation. I told Brian that I will give him the chance to put this right and I have him my number and said call me in the week and revert back what the outcome was once he spoke with his manager. I never got the call back and so that is why I’m posting this. Brian handled this very unprofessionally and we take offence to how this was handled and of being accused of something we did not do. We are also very friendly and respectful of the staff at Mount Nelson and I ask that the management contact me so that we can resolve this issue. Meal type: Other Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1

Dear Management, As a long-time local patron of the Mount Nelson Hotel, I have always enjoyed visiting the Planet Bar, especially for its consistent quality, service, and atmosphere. It has been a cherished part of my Sundays to indulge in my favorite meal and relax in the elegant setting. However, my recent visit was disappointing and left me feeling compelled to share my concerns. The changes to the menu, the quality and quantity of the food, and the overall presentation do not align with the high standards I have come to expect from such an esteemed establishment. In particular, the burger I ordered, which I have enjoyed numerous times in the past, was subpar in both taste and presentation. It raised questions about whether there has been a change in the chef or a shift in priorities due to the high tourist season. While I understand the need to cater to tourists during peak times, I am deeply concerned about how these changes affect your local patrons—the ones who support the establishment throughout the year, including during quieter periods. Additionally, the pricing has become increasingly steep, with cocktails reaching over R400 each. For many locals, this diminishes the value of an experience that was once a regular treat. It is disheartening to feel that the focus may have shifted away from fostering loyalty among local guests, which could have long-term consequences for both the hotel’s reputation and the livelihoods of your dedicated service staff. The Planet Bar has always been a place where locals and visitors alike could find quality and consistency, and I hope that management will reconsider these recent changes. I believe there is a way to strike a balance between catering to tourists and maintaining the loyalty of your local clientele, who have been instrumental in supporting the establishment through all seasons. Thank you for taking the time to consider this feedback. I hope that these concerns can be addressed to restore the high standard and welcoming atmosphere that the Planet Bar is known for.
