Bento Soul is the real deal and already one of the best new food spots in Rome. The fried catfish is outrageously good — fresh, flaky, cooked to order, perfectly seasoned, and somehow manages to deliver all the flavor you want without being overly salty, greasy, or dried out like so much catfish in the South. And the baked beans? Unreal. Sweet, savory, rich, slow-cooked, and so full of depth that they will legitimately change the way you think about beans. The mashed potatoes are true mashed potatoes — not whipped into glue, just homemade and done right — and the Soul Rolls are a genius touch, especially packed into their soul food bento boxes. What makes Bento Soul stand out is that this is not heat-lamp soul food sitting around waiting on you. The entrées and Soul Rolls are cooked to order, and you can taste the difference immediately. Even better, the service is exceptional. It’s a family-run place, with a retired father and mother helping support their daughter’s dream of sharing their family’s mixed heritage with Northwest Georgia, and that warmth comes through from the minute you walk up. On one of our first attempts to visit, they were running low because food had been selling steadily all evening, and instead of just turning us away, they put together a bag of what they had left for almost nothing. That kind of generosity and customer service is exactly why we came right back the next day. The setup is definitely more takeout-friendly than dine-in, and the ordering kiosk can be a little clunky, but neither of those things matter once you taste the food. Frankly, Bento Soul has raised the bar. There are other places in Rome serving catfish and sides, but Bento Soul is operating on a completely different level. It is not the cheapest meal in town, but it is absolutely worth every penny. Go early, get the catfish, get the beans, get the Soul Rolls, and thank me later.
