I love the actual size of the venue - however, the ticket greeter at the door was rude, the scallop appetizer was TOO salty and chewy (we sent it back, it was not edible), and the salad was wilted with too little dressing and dry chicken. Also, they need to STOP guests from standing directly in front of other guests, to avoid them blocking out the show. We have all paid to SEE the performance. The bright spot was our waitress, she was great! She kept up with water refills and was quick to bring us our OVERPRICED cocktails! We were there to see “Duke” - an acclaimed one-person theatrical show written and performed by Native Hawaiian actor, writer, and storyteller Moses Goods. The show was great... but the audio was meh. This isn't the first time the venue hasn't executed the audio correctly! I've been to Blue Note at least 50 times and half of the time it's crap. I've even had to leave from time to time -- which is a total waste of money. They really need to figure out how to sort out the kitchen execution and the audio execution! It's bringing down the experience -- which isn't a cheap night out! (You may be wondering why I continue to go back... and it's only because there aren't any alternatives.)

First and foremost, the staff and performers are amazing, and it’s a beautiful, intimate venue to see a show. HOWEVER, I honestly dread whenever an artist I like performs here because you’re forced to pay for food that is ridiculously expensive for how crappy the quality is. When our $15 quesadilla arrived, my boyfriend literally said, “Damn, those look sad.” They genuinely looked like Chef Mike cooked them (if you know, you know). The edamame was decent, but the sundae was 50% melted by the time it hit the table. You’re forced into a $20 food/drink minimum per person for meals that look like they were whipped up in a freshman dorm and you still have to tip on top of that. So those $40 tickets actually end up costing at least $70 per person once you factor in the mandatory extras. There’s no way to avoid the fee, so if you drink alcohol, just stick to cocktails to hit the minimum. The food is just depressing, and you can tell zero love went into making it. They seriously need to partner with a local chef to revamp the menu.

Blue Note Hawaii — not quite living up to the name... I really wanted to enjoy Blue Note Hawaii more than I did. Blue Note has a great reputation, and I arrived with expectations shaped by both my love of jazz — particularly bebop — and being a semi-regular patron of Blue Note Tokyo during my military tenure. I will support almost any venue that keeps live jazz, blues and quality musicianship alive. We need more of them, not fewer. Unfortunately, Blue Note Hawaii didn't quite live up to the name. Before attending, I specifically asked whether they could accommodate my partner, Sherrie, who is vision impaired and experiences heightened anxiety in crowded environments. The response was essentially dismissive. There seemed to be little concern, no real attempt to understand what assistance might be required, and certainly no sense of accountability. We weren't seeking special treatment — just some consideration of her circumstances. For a venue carrying the Blue Note name, that was particularly disappointing. We were there to see Fleetwood Mask. Fleetwood Mac sits firmly in the soundtrack of my childhood, alongside the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt, so perhaps nostalgia sets an impossibly high bar. There were some good moments, and the instrumental musicianship was first rate. Of the performers taking on the individual members of Fleetwood Mac, Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham came closest to par for me. At times I closed my eyes and tried very hard to summon Stevie, but she never quite appeared. Perhaps that's an impossibly high bar — some voices and stage presences are simply very difficult to recreate. Overall, Fleetwood Mask was musically accomplished, but the performance never quite transported me back in the way I had hoped. That's the difficulty with taking on music that carries so many memories: you're not just playing the songs, you're competing with what those songs have meant to people for nearly half a century. The bigger disappointment was the overall Blue Note Hawaii experience. It was expensive for what it delivered and, taken as a whole, didn't represent particularly good value for money. The best part of the evening was catching up with some very close friends, and I'm glad we went for that reason alone. I'll continue to support venues that provide a stage for live music — particularly jazz and blues — and I'll retain considerable affection for the Blue Note name because of my experiences in Tokyo. But Blue Note Hawaii needs to be careful that it isn't living off the reputation associated with that name rather than consistently delivering the experience that created it.
