We've spent a fair amount of time in Chama, and have tried every local food option. Boxcar Cafe is the best. They have some really tasty Mexican and American food options. Prices are reasonable, and the service is good - especially considering the government-induced labor shortage that was quite severe when we were there.

This is one place that will be worth eating in. Come for breakfast, lunch or dinner and you will not regret it. The food is great and well made, and the service it just as good. It is a favorite with the locals, and right across from the Cumbers and Toltec Railroad, so the scenery is fantastic.

We were disappointed.We were there for lunch on Friday, 10/09. It took about 20 minutes after we placed our order for the food to be delivered. I didn't think they were that busy since we arrived around 1:00 and it looked like almost everyone was eating or finished. When the plates were delivered we noticed that the plates were very warm but the food wasn't. The food must have been hot at some point because the cheese was melted. The carne adovada was flavorful, but not hot (seasonally or thermally). The cheese enchiladas were OK, and the green chili sauce was not hot (seasonally or thermally). The rice on both of our plates was dry and crunchy. Probably won't go back.
