I have frequented Burgoo for more than a year, and my partner has for more than 20 years. Last week, we ordered some of our favourites for delivery. There was a metal staple in our corn and chicken soup. My partner thankfully found it in her mouth while chewing, first thinking it was a bone, then pulling it out and seeing it was metal. I immediately phoned the restaurant. No answer. I phoned twice more. No answer. I phoned another Burgoo location on Main and informed them of what happened, and they assured me they would contact this location on 10th and tell them, give them my info, and have them call me. Once I had this Burgoo on the phone, they told me they didn’t know the source of the staple, and that there aren’t even staples in the kitchen (even though our bag had been stapled closed), and that the kitchen had discarded that batch of soup. Their solution to this ordeal was offering a gift card for $13. I made it clear I didn’t find this solution to be acceptable, and that we feared more pieces of metal would be in the rest of our food which we wouldn’t be eating. When I explained this, they “guaranteed” me that there aren’t any more staples in our food. How could they possibly guarantee this without knowing the source of the first staple, which was in a sealed soup container, covered by a lid? The person I spoke to at that time explained that they would need authorization from a supervisor to do anything more than offer a $13 gift card I would have to come pick up. I asked to speak to a supervisor. No one was available. I asked them to get a supervisor to call me the next afternoon. No call that day. No call the next day. Or the next. Or since. It’s highly concerning to me that they haven’t “found” the source of the staple that could have punctured my partner’s esophagus. Metal in food is a safety hazard. Not knowing where it came from is even more of a safety hazard. A $13 gift card doesn’t cut it, though I don’t at all blame the worker that explained they weren’t allowed to help me. No supervisor being available to even hear about such a safety risk is unacceptable. And then not hearing from anyone that could do anything after the fact is just insulting. Had my partner swallowed this staple, this situation would have gone much differently. How much metal needs to be in our food to be taken seriously?
