Fish tastes like it’s been fried in 2-day old oil and food is salty. For lobster roll, bun is soggy and doesn’t taste good. Wouldn’t eat there again. Meal type: Lunch Price per person: $20–40 Food: 2 Service: 2 Atmosphere: 4

Crikey, where do I even start. Captain Hooked on Mountjoy Parade has absolutely smashed it out of the park — or should I say, out of the water. The lobster rolls? Mate. The BEST I’ve ever had, and I don’t chuck that around lightly. Generous serving, loaded with lobster the way a lobster roll should be (none of this three-sad-chunks-drowning-in-mayo nonsense), and the sauce-to-lobster ratio was chef’s kiss — balanced, flavoursome, and not a soggy bun in sight. Absolute ripper of a feed. But here’s the thing — the dining experience at Captain Hooked comes with a free side of pure, unhinged Australian wildlife entertainment. The proprietor, bless him, is on constant high alert about the local sulphur-crested cockatoos making off with the crockery. And fair enough too — these absolute larrikins have zero respect for private property and will look you dead in the eyes while daring you to do something about it. For the tourists among us: stay. Sit down. Do not leave. You are about to witness Australia’s most chaotic free floor show. These big white cheeky chickens (as we’ve now permanently renamed them) will strut up, cock their yellow crests at you, and stare you down like they own the joint. Which, honestly, they do. The staff even handed us a spray bottle to defend our lunch. We felt like we’d been issued a weapon. We used it. The cockatoos were unbothered. Friendly service, outrageously good seafood, and a side of fauna-induced chaos you simply cannot get anywhere else. Five stars, no notes. We stopped midweek for large family gathering takeaway. Staff were really good and friendly and prices were pretty good and good value for money with ample servings. We had calamari, which was really tasty and cooked well and sampled whiting and snapper. Both were really good fish. The chips were good and plenty.
