When seated he immediately asked me if he could play the video game. I quietly explained that he knew he was unable to. He then began to get hysterical and was begging me. I tried to calm him, but he began to get out of hand. This is when Heather showed up to take our drink orders. I am trying to redirect my son's attention to something other than the video game. Heather walks over to him and squats down to his level. She asked him what he wanted to drink and he answered her. She ran to get our drinks and came back to my son borderline meltdown. I was about to take him outside to try to calm him when Heather returned. Again, she squatted to his level and asked him, "Do you want to know a secret?" This peaked my son's interest and stopped crying to look at her. She continued by explaining why Moms have to take stuff away in words he could understand. She told him that she knew he was a good boy and that his Mommy is just teaching "you how to grow up to be a good man." Heather continued speaking to him, saying she recognized that he was very sorry and that tomorrow is just one night away. Then he could get video games back. He was still angry, but I could tell he was absorbing what she was telling him. She brought me my drink and I thanked her for talking to him. We started talking and I found out she recognized that he has Autism. She saw the characteristics of a meltdown (not tantrum) and was trying to calm him.
There are very few servers who put the kids' meals in first, so they come out sooner than the rest of the table. Heather had the kids meals out first which really helped calm my son. When he was happily eating his cheese pizza she walked over to him and said, "I am so proud of you! You are being so good and grown up! Can I have a high five?" My son then turned and gave her a big smile with a high five.
This interaction may seem like it isn't a big deal, but it is the world to me! My son was very stressed and I was exhausted, so to have someone step up with a kind word and good motivation really changed the atmosphere at dinner tonight.
Thank you very much, Heather! Look forward to eating at Chilis again soon!
