チャイナRai — Comfort, Character, and Quiet Craft China Rai is one of those places that doesn’t try to impress — and ends up doing so anyway. The name changed (formerly Usukebo China Ichigaya), so some people assumed the owner or concept changed too. It didn’t. The chef–owner is still the same person: a former salaryman who chose the 脱サラ path, built this restaurant with his own hands, and has quietly fed the appetites of former colleagues, staff, and the neighborhood ever since. That background shows. ⸻ Getting there: part of the experience My personal recommendation: take a slow walk from Ichigaya Station, Exit 3. From the subway, head toward TV Road, then gently walk uphill. It’s a mild slope — even slow walkers can manage it comfortably — and it naturally puts you in the right rhythm before arriving. That short walk somehow matches the restaurant itself: unhurried, human, and unforced. ⸻ Atmosphere: easy, cheerful, and oddly memorable The interior feels like stepping into an old ship — almost Pirates of the Caribbean–like. Spacious, a little nostalgic, slightly playful. Back in the day, there was even a surprisingly serious whiskey collection behind the bar. It’s comfortable rather than stylish. Lived-in rather than polished. That comfort is why the place is loved not just by office workers, but also by nearby TV stations, universities, professors, actors, and broadcasters. People who value consistency tend to return. ⸻ Lunch vs. Dinner: two different personalities Lunch • Fast, efficient, almost like a well-run teishoku-ya • Three or more table turnovers is normal • Not flashy, but filling, warm, and easy on the wallet • Designed to feed working people properly Dinner • Slower pace, no rush • Tables are not turned — customers are allowed to stay and enjoy • Dishes are noticeably more refined • The same kitchen, but a different mindset You can feel that the concept intentionally changes between day and night. ⸻ Food: Japanese-style Sichuan, stable and honest The Sichuan Dan Dan Noodles are the signature for a reason — rich, spicy, grounded by black sesame, and extremely consistent. It’s not about surprise; it’s about reliability. Prices are reasonable, almost old-fashioned. Lunch fills your stomach. Dinner shows the kitchen’s finesse. Interestingly, some Chinese customers even come here to observe Japanese-style Chinese cooking. That occasionally confuses people expecting “authentic Chinese,” but this place isn’t pretending to be that. It’s doing its own thing — and doing it well. ⸻ Service & character: the invisible ingredient One chef handles everything. Not loudly, not theatrically. Service is quick at lunch, attentive at night. Private rooms are available, making it popular for group dinners and farewell gatherings. Recently, we stopped by just to say hello. There were no seats available — lunch rush in full swing — but even that brief visit felt worth the one-hour trip. That kind of warmth doesn’t come from branding. It comes from long relationships. ⸻ Practical notes • Lunch: walk in, quick turnover • Dinner: RSVP recommended • Easy access from Ichigaya / Kojimachi / Yotsuya / Hanzomon • Try the walk from Ichigaya Exit 3 via TV Road if you have time ⸻ Final thought China Rai isn’t trying to be famous. It’s trying to feed people properly — day after day. And that quiet consistency is exactly why people keep coming back. Meal type: Other Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5
