Food is great and reasonably priced. However, the server (she had glasses) seemed to struggle with basic human interaction, was not friendly or welcoming and spoilt a visit to a nice cafe. I'm not sure I want to visit again if it is such an imposition. Edit: This was my third visit. The other two visits were enjoyable which is why I visited again. Each visit is a 32 mile round trip. In addition, Nottingham doesn't have many vegetarian or vegan eateries, so it was nice to find somewhere with good food. Nevertheless, regardless of the type of cafe, I would expect a nice welcome and polite service. The owner's reply suggests some customers are not valued (I get the impression regulars are treated differently). Meal type: Breakfast Price per person: £1–10 Food: 5 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 3 Vegetarian offerings: Menu is all vegetarian

What an incredibly disappointing review to read. We proudly work with volunteers from all walks of life, including people who may communicate differently to your expectations. Ableist comments about someone’s personality or social interactions are not acceptable. As for being an imposition, community cafés probably aren’t the right fit if kindness and inclusivity feel inconvenient.

It’s a real shame that in a city like Nottingham, which is currently starving for decent vegan spots, a place with this much potential can feel so unwelcoming. While the neighborhood is lovely and the walk from the centre is pleasant enough, the experience itself was a bit of a Valentine’s Day rollercoaster. The decor is charming, but the space is undeniably tight. I had to claim a table for two that was still cluttered with the plates of previous customers, much like the rest of the cafe. Despite my friendly 'hello' upon entering, I was met with total silence from the staff. I wasn't sure whether to consult the menu or the blackboard, ordered by the till or if there was a table service, the lady behind the counter barely reacted, or showed a bit of an angry body language. When I tentatively asked which cakes were vegan, the lady barista’s condescending 'Both of them?' made me feel immediately unwelcome. When I later asked where the sugar was, she didn't even bother with eye contact, simply stating it was on the table when it wasn't. Thankfully, a girl from the kitchen appeared, almost apologetically, to bring some over, but the rude vibe from the barista was already well-established. The food, at least, offered some consolation - the banana and Biscoff cake was insanely amazing, and while the oat milk latte had some questionable foam standards that would make a purist weep, the friendly prices make it hard to complain too much about the coffee quality. However, the real kicker was the finale. I had fully intended to order a sandwich or soup to continue my review, and stay there for a bit to read, but after a quick trip to the toilet, I returned to find my table stripped and the barista informing two new customers that the seat was free. Rather than being asked if I was finished, I was essentially escorted out by the awkward presence of people standing over my belongings waiting for me to leave. Between the lack of basic hospitality and clearly favoured regular customers who allowed their baby to scream and smash things for forty minutes, it wasn't exactly the peaceful Valentine's treat I’d envisioned for myself. The cake is worth a visit, but if the staff find customer interaction this painful, they might want to trade the espresso machine for a career in prison guard vacancies where a lack of warmth is a job requirement. Amazing healthy and excellent value menu. The crocus cafe is a little oasis in the concrete jungle of Nottingham with a brilliantly shady outdoor seating area. Far nicer than many places more expensive. This will be my regular coffee spot in Notts from now on.
