My mom and I have been stopping at Czech Stop in West, TX every single time we travel to San Antonio. For years, this was one of those places that felt special to us—a nostalgic part of our trips that we genuinely looked forward to. Unfortunately, our most recent visit was extremely disappointing, and honestly, it broke my heart to see how much this place has changed. We stopped two days ago around 7–8 AM, and the atmosphere felt completely different from what we remember. What used to feel like a fun, welcoming, nostalgic stop now feels more like a run-down gas station. The employees appeared miserable, and the overall experience felt cold and unwelcoming. The interaction that bothered me the most involved the cashier we had—a tall, blonde woman. From the moment we approached the register, her tone toward customers was extremely stern and cold. My mom is 4’9”, and the checkout counter was so ridiculously tall that even at 5’3”, I could barely see over it. My mom jokingly said, “They couldn’t have made a normal counter?” The cashier then laughed and called my mom “vertically challenged.” Maybe she thought she was being funny, but it was not funny to my mom. My mom has spent her entire life hearing jokes and comments about her height. She has heard every version of them, and frankly, it gets old. For an employee to make a personal comment about her appearance and height while she was simply trying to check out was incredibly unprofessional and degrading. My mom was genuinely hurt by it. There is a huge difference between being friendly and making a customer the punchline of a joke. And unfortunately, that wasn’t the only disappointment. We asked for our food to be warmed up, yet everything still came out cold, and the taste was noticeably off compared to what we have experienced in the past. For a place that has built such a strong reputation and has been a tradition for so many travelers, that was incredibly disappointing. I’m not writing this review because I want to attack anyone. I’m writing it because we genuinely used to love this place. We have memories here. We have stopped here countless times during our trips to San Antonio. Czech Stop was part of the journey for us. That is why this visit hurt so much. I truly hope management takes these concerns seriously—not just the food or the appearance of the establishment, but the way customers are spoken to and treated. Employees represent the business, and customers should never leave feeling embarrassed, degraded, or unwelcome. My mom deserved better than being turned into a joke because of her height. And honestly, the Czech Stop we walked into this time didn’t feel like the Czech Stop we have loved for years. I sincerely hope that changes, because it would be a shame for a place with so much history and nostalgia to lose the very warmth that made people want to keep coming back.
