I discovered Dabba via a word of mouth- and it is a real gem! Tucked away on a quiet side street, this South Indian fusion restaurant is bright, cheerful, and warm. They seem to be open generally thrice a week - and it is evident that the owners pour their heart and soul into it. I ordered the RAMC beef curry Dabba, inspired by the owner’s grandfather who served in North Africa in the 1940s. As the granddaughter of an Army Engineer who also served in the Middle East and North Africa during that exact same years, reading that history felt like a bridge - although perhaps the canteen food I remember usually had a lot of potatoes and peas and less of the beef! I loved the barotta/parata, which was of the type made in South India/Kerala, and the chutney, which was a total surprise. The kitchen is also open- so you can see the owners preparing everything. I am indeed looking forward to visiting again! A pro-tip: Even on a Wednesday, the place was buzzing and packed. I strongly suggest both reserving a table and checking their website before heading there. They are not open every day and all updated times are in the website. Took two friends from Bristol here last night after an early showing at Picturehouse. Warm welcome, accommodating staff and delicious food plus a relaxing atmosphere. The menu has its roots in India but has been adapted by the owners to create a tasty mix of dishes, including some with Portuguese influence. We all had different Dabba boxes which truly were a four-stack of flavours for each of us, but we had the same pudding – the scrumptious basundi. The portions were just right. Dabba opens at 4pm and continues until around 10pm so worth, for example, considering for either a pre- or post-cinema/ theatre meal. A great independent restaurant in the heart of Chester.
