I refuse to tip on Point of Sale "POS" restaurant software. In the US tips are: 1) compulsory where the service worker earns less than minimum wage and relies on tips; and 2) tips for exceptional service. I'm in the "once was a waitress" ranks, know how to tip, and do my best to be low maintenance. A first-time Dante Pizzeria Napoletana guest is received in a queue with the assumption that the guest is more likely to tip if required to press a "no tip" button to opt out of tipping with the server awkwardly waiting for the guest to complete the transaction. When I dine at a restaurant that offers a total service experience rather than standing in a fast food style queue, I tip based on the quality of the food, how I am treated, and how long I had to wait. Must you shake me down to tip before I receive service or food? DPN has a dedicated parking lot and this certainly ups the total service experience for a Blackstone establishment. The interior is pleasant and inviting. The staff was gracious. The wood roasted pork meatballs on a bed of polenta may have been a tad pricey at $12.00 for 3 meatballs. They were tasty and the polenta was impeccable. The Farm Greens with lemon & thyme, grana padano & pistachio at $11.00 were very fresh and the dressing was creamy and exquisite. The Margherita pizza ($11.00) was fine but not warm enough. Plus $9 to share a quartino (8 oz) of wine. This is also a nice touch for guests that are driving. The bill for 2 people before tax was $43. Not exorbitant for fresh, high quality ingredients. Back to the service experience. I stood in a fast food style line, poured my own water from a station, and helped myself to silverware dispensed from a table top caddy. Nope, no tip in advance but you are welcome to check with me after the service experience and we can settle up for exceptional service.
