It’s one of the rare restaurants that serve food epitomises generations of superior culinary expertise though in an earthy, traditional sense. The radish sections cooked in special soy sauce with black sugar for hours are one of their signature dishes and both the texture and taste have reached perfection. The fried vegetable pancake is a sheer delight with its alluring aroma and sensational crunch. The tempura-style crab leg meat has a delicious homemade ginger sauce to go with it and is certainly worth a try. Last but not least is the chicken breast fried in batter and is as tender as tofu! Daruma is a cozy, no-frills Japanese restaurant that serves up classic comfort food with a few surprising highlights. We had the tenzaru soba, yakitamago gohan, and katsudon. The tenzaru came with chilled soba and crispy tempura, though the fried items were a bit too oily for our taste. It could have been redeemed with a tempura dipping sauce, but this was not provided as a part of the dish. The katsudon was hearty and satisfying, with soft egg and sweet-savory sauce layered over thick pork cutlet. Again, the fry could have been lighter, but the flavor was still solid. The standout was the yakitamago gohan—grilled egg over rice with crispy bits that added a delicious texture and smoky flavor. The secret soy-based sauce was delicious and excellently complemented the crispy rice and runny yolk. Easily the best dish of the meal. Service was friendly, and the portions were generous. While not everything was perfect, Daruma is a reliable spot with a few gems worth coming back for. Price per person: ¥1,000–2,000 Food: 3 Service: 4 Atmosphere: 4
