In Austin subs (or hoagies) have been around for a long time. However, in 1980 Peter Ademski founded the Delaware Sub Shop. He is the man responsible for bringing East Coast staples like the Philly Cheesesteak and Delaware Italian Subs to Austin, Texas. If you ask 100 people where is the best cheesesteak in Austin, a lot of people are going to say Hoodies in Round Rock. Guess where Richard Hoody got his start? At Delaware Subs. He was Pete's business partner when they were founded. Some might say, Tucci’s Southside Subs? Like Hoody's their fans are very vocal about the quality of their sandwiches. As it turns out, Dave Tucci worked for Pete and the two Tucci's locations at Oak Hill and on William Cannon Drive were both Delaware Subs stores at one time. At its peak, Pete has 15 company and franchise locations. How about Grata's? Owner Diego Bastista almost bought Delaware Subs a few years back. Now he uses many of their vendors for his sub products and has styled his subs very similar to Delaware's. What a legacy to leave the city. In 2026, Pete will begin his 46th year of operations. He says the keys to being in business so long are using high quality meats, cheeses, breads and other staples, as well as a dedication to the process of making sandwiches which he learned at Casapulca's Subs, in Wilmington Delaware. If you go here, these are two choices you should really try that feature all of the great tastes that Delaware offers. One of Delaware's taglines is "The Place for Cheesesteaks." All subs are offered in 6" and 12" sizes. I recommend you try The Sizemore a double meat, double cheese creation served with onions and sweet peppers. Named after NFL star Jerry who helped market the chain (appropriately he played for the Philadelphia Eagles), after tasting Delaware's cheesesteak and loving it. All of Pete's ingredients for The Sisemore were sourced from contacts he built after Casapulca's. Liscio Rolls are as must, as is high quality ribeye meat. Delaware also offers guests a choice of provolone or Cooper Sharp American cheese, but don't ask for whiz. He thinks that mostly a gimmick for tourists visiting the well know traps on Passyunk Avenue in Philly. The taste is spot on for cheesesteak aficionados. Perfect blending of flavors in every bite. The second sub I would recommend is the Prosciutto Italian. Delaware actually had three Italian subs, each sub builds upon the basic Italian which contains Genoa salami, capicola, boiled ham, provolone, lettuce, tomatoes and onions as well as their Italian dressing. The Gourmet Italian adds proscuittini ham, to all the Basic Italian ingredients. Finally with the Prosciutto Italian, Sudtruol imported prosciutto is folded into the mix. I had the chance to try it sliced alone and it took me back to my trip to Parma earlier in the year. Give me some fresh mozzarella and melon and I would be set. But, I digress. Back to the subs, I mention folding, because that is another artistic staple of east coast subs. Do it wrong and, trust me you'll hear about it. Pete says the meat surrounds the vegetables. You get a taste of the wonderful cold cuts along with veggies and dressing in every bite. While the Prosciutto Italian bulges out of the roll, Pete is not creating gargantuan selections on his menu. He says people want a good sub for a good price. "That's what we give them. We concentrate on consistency of our subs and not skimping on the quality of our ingredients. There's No Baloney Here (a second tagline) The Prosciutto Italian is money. I like it even better than the cheesesteak. It's one of the two best in Austin. Delaware's Sisemore is also a top three for cheesestakes in the city as well. There are no other places that do both as well in one shop. In these days when the G.O.A.T. acronym is thrown a lot, there is really only one O.G. worthy of the G.O.A.T moniker for subs in Austin and it is Pete Ademski and Delaware Subs.
