The best meal I've had in Edinburgh. A very cool space, definitely recommend the dining counter as the staff are so friendly and clearly happy to be working there. Special shout out to Isla who was incredible! We'd heard from friends to definitely get whatever their broth option. It absolutely did not disappoint. The highlight for me was the spider crab soup which I believe was a special, the muscles came in a very close second, the best tasting muscles I've ever had. Got a couple pieces of the focaccia to mop up the sauce. Drinks were spot on, the list was concise enough to not feel overwhelming while also offering a great range. Price per person: £80–90

Hands down the best meal we had during our two-week trip to Scotland! We were recommended this place by a staff member at another restaurant and managed to snag a lunch reservation before our flight the next day. We had: - Chicken of the Woods with wild garlic dip (5/5) - So light and airy yet absolutely scrumptious. It really does taste like meat, which completely blew my mind! - Focaccia (4/5) - Also very good, though the top tasted a bit burnt to me. Just a personal preference. - Lamb belly with courgette (100/5) - A must-order! The skin was perfectly crispy while the meat was incredibly tender. It paired beautifully with the courgette. - Razor clams with fermented chili (5/5) - This was a substitute for another seafood dish on the menu (cockles, I think?) I love razor clams, so this was perfect. They were not overcooked, had a slight chew, and the chili sauce absolutely wowed both of us. - Gnocchi with pheasant back mushrooms (4/5) - A generous portion, and we especially loved the mushrooms. We’d never had them before, and they had a very interesting texture. - Dessert - We were debating between the tiramisu and the vanilla ice cream. We ended up choosing the ice cream based on our server’s recommendation, and she was absolutely right! It came with syrup, peaches, and chocolate crumbles on top. The combination of textures and flavors in every bite was perfect. I wish I’d ordered a second one! Overall, we were extremely impressed by both the food and the service. The price was also very reasonable considering the level of execution. They deserve a Michelin star! Meal type: Lunch Price per person: £60–70 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5

I had the chance to visit Dogstar recently and it was genuinely one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had. The concept of smaller, shareable plates means you get to try a bit of everything and every dish felt thoughtful and full of flavour. I’m quite a picky eater and if I’m honest the look of mussels usually creeps me out - but after trying one, I genuinely couldn’t stop. No matter how much the texture put me off at first, the taste completely overpowered it. Even had to ask for a spoon to eat the rest of the garlic butter they were drenched in! So even if you’re a picky eater, I’d really encourage going in with an open mind, it’s so worth it. The menu changes daily, so it’s hard to describe exactly what we had, but everything from the fish dishes to the dessert - was incredible. I know this might sound like I’m just listing things, but I honestly can’t put into words how good it all tasted. The cocktails were also amazing and you can really tell how much care goes into both the food and drinks. It’s a small, cosy and intimate restaurant and the staff are the loveliest people and so welcoming, which makes the whole experience even more special. I’ll definitely be back and it’s somewhere I’d recommend to anyone. I actually studied Dogstar as part of a hospitality and tourism assignment, but visiting in person and also knowing how much effort and thought goes on behind the scenes made the experience even more impressive. 10/10.
