I went into Double44 looking for a WC and immediately said I was happy to buy something. I was told they were closing and wouldn’t serve me. Fine. I then asked if I could simply use the toilet. “Only for customers.” That rather sums up the experience. I offered to become a customer, they declined my money, then used the fact that I wasn’t a customer to refuse a very small courtesy. And before the inevitable explanation arrives: yes, I understand the toilet is “for customers”. Yes, I understand they said they were closing. That is precisely what happened. If the answer is “we’re not a charity” - I looked at how some of the other one-star reviews have been answered, and I’m glad I did - I wasn’t asking for charity. I had offered to pay. A few metres away at The Brick, I asked the waitress the same question. She immediately welcomed us in and actually told us there was no need to buy anything to use their facilities. Needless to say, at that point I suddenly fancied a Jack and Coke and stayed for one. Funny how hospitality works: the place that asked for nothing got my money. The place that was very particular about who counts as a customer didn’t. The owner is of course welcome to reply and explain why they were entitled to handle it this way. But this review isn’t addressed to them and it isn’t an invitation to debate. Frankly, I am not interested in anything they have to say in response. I’m simply telling other people what happened so they can decide for themselves what they make of it. For what it’s worth, I only checked the Google reviews for Double44 and The Brick afterwards. That - and particularly the way some of the one-star reviews have been answered - was illuminating. Meal type: Other Food: 1 Service: 1 Atmosphere: 1
