Last minute booking, I was very happy they could accomodate. We choose the tasting menu. Every dish was flavoursome and well balanced. With most SE asian dishes getting the sweet, salty and sour balance is the key and the chef nailed it. Truely great vietnamese food that has not been dumbed down. The wine list is absolutely amazing if you appreciate wine. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Order type: Dine in Meal type: Dinner Price per person: $180–200

Maybe they were having an off night, or maybe we just ordered the wrong dishes. The staff were friendly. But, it seemed other tables that arrived and ordered long after we did kept getting served first. It’s a bit weird having the water poured for you and then stored elsewhere so you’re only getting refills when the staff come by or when you go and find it yourself too. The food did not impress. I’d heard and read great things about this place, but nothing we ordered really stood out for any positive reason. We started with the prawn tartlets which I really struggled to not gag on. Super strong prawn taste and smell with none of the other ingredients shining through. After that, we had the pork belly with a side of rice and steamed vegetables. It was fine, but the texture of the pork was quite stringy and the portion was small. Our other main was the beef rib, nothing impressive here. The daikon on top gave it an unappealing smell (maybe that’s just me though) and the peanut sauce and beef flavour and texture didn’t mesh well. Almost everything was just warm, nothing came out close to hot. Honestly, we mostly ate what we had because we didn’t want it to go to waste. For the price of $168 for an entree, two mains with sides, and two glasses of wine, I’d expect way better food. If I could do it all again. I would have cancelled the rest of our order after the entree and found somewhere else. I’m really disappointed to say this because I can see all the good reviews and fermentAsian has such a great reputation by word of mouth. So again, maybe they were just having an off night.
