“While in the South, do as the Southerners do.” I’m not sure who first said that (possibly no one), but I’m applying that logic while on this trip to Georgia. Therefore, it seems only logical that this philosophy lead me to the doorstep of my first encounter with the famed “Shrimp and Grits” experience. While we have greatly enjoyed meals at “First Watch” when visiting Colorado, we certainly didn’t expect to find another location here in Columbus (nor could we have predicted that this is where my introduction to shrimp and grits would take place). Admittedly my ignorance of “the grit” fostered some anxiety within me, but I bravely soldiered on beneath the banner of adventure. (In truth that “bravery” had its limits and I did an internet search for images while at the table just to prepare myself for what might emerge on my plate after it departed the kitchen.) As it turns out my fears of the unknown were unwarranted. I sheepishly sampled the grits first. Then the shrimp. And then a bite of both together. Wow, that combo of flavors was really impressive y’all! Now my only fear moving forward is that when I order this again after leaving the South I may be greatly disappointed. While nothing during this meal could upstage my entree, I have to admit that the “Holey Donuts” (with accompanying chocolate and berry sauce) were also delish.
