So I was enticed to join my other teammates here by a cheap fee to play. Sadly, I did not do my homework before I gave them my money and learned firsthand why the league fee is only $280. Just getting into the parking lot was like driving on the surface of Mars. The pot holes, however, turned out to be great when the ball got hit over that pathetic fence at least 50% of the time. If you actually are into volleyball like me and want to be even the slightest bit "competitive," then DO NOT play at Flattery's. The courts are not full size and they are bordered by a thick (and painful) rope that acts as a boundary line. Oh and good luck playing if it's rained in the last 48 hours....the place is a total pool of mud. There isn't nearly the proper drainage, with water almost up to your knees on one side of the courts. Don't be diving either...under that thin 1 inch of sand is a hard concrete slab. We had players that had to tap out mid-season because of the damaging impact it had on their knees.
All that aside, the absolute worst part of Flattery's volleyball are the refs. Most people would complain about bad ref calls...but how about just getting a few calls? Most of the refs are so busy zoning out (probably because they're high or drunk) that they miss entire plays. Dozens of times during the season both teams had to ask about calls for a carry, out of bounds, touching the net, and if they could flip to the next point because uhhhhhmmm WE JUST SCORED....So glad we have to pay them $8 each night...and they get another $8 from the other team. I'd love to make $16 in 45 minutes just to show up and puff on a whistle when asked. I would've rather played with no ref and just kept score ourselves.
So all in all, if you like volleyball...go elsewhere. I'm not saying every place is perfect, but it's worth the drive to go to Dock at the Bay in the summertime or Holidays all year round - which is about 5 minutes away. By no means am I promoting these places but they are much classier, have better food, actual refs and better courts - and Dock gives a free pitcher of beer after every game.
They may cost more (between $310 and $480 per team, per season) but you definitely get what you pay for!
