Coffee. Lunch. Cake. That's the takeaway Fleet River Bakery would like you to have. "What the heck is a duffin?", I asked my friend after he'd recommended it to me upon hearing that I'd be visiting Fleet River Bakery. Though I realized almost instinctively that thanks to Dominique Ansel's creation of the cronut, the world had gone crazy looking for the next Frankenstein baked good. Having tried some excellent Cruffins in Philly, more likely than not "Duffin" stood for Doughnut+muffin. To the credit of the Brits, at least they didn't create a hullabaloo around it with the typically understated reaction of: what's new about putting jam in a cake? ... sparing the hype chasers from adding another item on their list. I'm partial towards bakeries that bake on premises, as opposed to the chains that are factory-like in their operations with a ginormous centralized kitchen. Fleet River Bakery does just that from the early morning and offers a selection of half a dozen plus cakes on display (and another 20 odd that can be ordered at 48 hours notice) that can appeal to everyone - including vegans and those on a gluten free diet. Additionally, the bakery carries brownies, cookies, quiches, frittatas, sandwiches, and salads. Whenever I have to choose a slice of cake, beyond the obvious consideration of flavor, I attempt to identify the cake that was baked most recently given a personal premium for freshness. Beyond the visual inspection, i rely on a general rule of thumb that's helped my odds over the years: pick the cake which has the maximum number of slices remaining. Unless you choose a cake that no one is interested in (never happens to the popular flavors) odds are that the cake that is mostly whole will have been the one most recently out of the kitchen. So, there you have it: Probability as applied to cake selection... Accordingly, I chose a slice of the carrot cake (with walnuts and cream cheese frosting) and another of the Ultimate Chocolate Cake. Both the cakes were delightful and with the perfect crumb. Speaking of cakes, I almost forgot about the M word hearing which drives people crazy: not moist (bad way), but Monmouth Coffee (good way). Pair off your cake slice with a cup of coffee and enjoy the modern-rustic vibe. Prices are very reasonable and keep the nearby LSE students in mind as their prime customer demographic.
